I buy what's on sale. I have some Smartwool, Wigwam, REI brand and recently bought some Salomon wool blend ski socks at TJMaxx, a two pack for $7. Those are my current favorites.
Love Smart Wool socks, and especially because they come in more than one "size." Most socks (for women, anyway) really only fit up to a woman's shoe size 9 or 9.5, and that's before they shrink. Going to men's socks is really not an option because they are too big and specifically too wide.
There are a couple different weights in Smart Wool socks, as well as a couple of lengths, from ankle socks on up. They wash well, don't shrink much (I don't put them in the dryer, though), are very soft and don't itch at all (and I have trouble with wool sweaters, even merino wool).
I particularly like the stripes and patterns in the walking-type socks.
I love Smart Wool. Once I bought a few pair I never looked back. I did try a couple of the Walmart brands that are similar, but they aren't anywhere near the quality. The heels wore out pretty fast, so you get what you pay for. However, you can get some good deals on the REI brand when they go on sale, they are just as good as the Smart Wool.
Smart Wool. I've never heard of it before. So..where all can they be purchased? Stores I mean?
EMS, REI, and any other outdoor sports/camping stores. If you shop online you can find them all over, but they have different thicknesses, so keep an eye out for that.
My husband is really into them. I mainly wear them with boots (hiking/casual.) Occasionally I'll wear the ankle ones with sneakers, but I find my feet sweat a bit more with the wool as opposed to cotton socks.

Usually "outdoor outfitters" (places that sell hiking boots and gear, bicycle shops, ski shops etc) so REI is a good bet. Sometimes you can get great deals on-line at Sierra Trading Post.
It's the end of April, and for the last 36 hours i been sick with a fever. To stay warm right now, i got on 2 pair of these socks.
They work well in real cold too, like -40 below 0.
Not all feet are equal though, and sometimes the thick and thinner areas don't line up with my feet in 'all' boots, and that can hurt.
These socks can be had in a slew of places.. I try to get them all the same, at one time. Colors are not whats important. Who can see what color socks are when there inside boots?
