Ash will cancel out red tones. I would put it on that spot first and then do the rest of your head. But you need to go just as dark or darker then your natural color. The reason it came up red is that a dark ash blonde is lighter then your natural color. Your natural color is your roots. So that blonde color tried to lift your natural color... A darker color will fix it. Just apply the right color to that spot first.

By the way, I used to do hair...

Well my highlights were very light blonde.I tried to use Ferias highlighting kit and it turned it very bright and brassy, then last night i got the brown dye which you can still see the brassy blonde slightly up top.The rest of my hair is like ashy/greyish.I tried the auburn on a small spot on my roots and it is RED.Not the color it is supposed to be.At this point i can deal with a dark brown,i do not want black.I know the dark will fade.WHat do i have to do?

Yikes...you have a lot of colors going on there. I just want to tell you, without filling it first it probably will not be a nice even color right away... I would do a warm med. brown... THis will cover the ashy/greyish part of your hair. It will neutralize it. It will not be ashy anymore. It will be more of a warm color. Now your 'bright and brassy' highlights might pull more red from the red base in the color. But with that, after a couple of days you can apply the same color again and it should completely cover the highlights.

What about semi perm. color??

Get med. warm brown...Yes it will cover, I just don't know how even it will be. Meaning, some patches might be ashy and some might not be. Due to your highlights. Not a big deal though. But yes, it should cover it all.
