Default Purging one's wardrobe - how and how often?

I think this is an interesting topic.

How often do you purge your wardrobe and what rules do you apply?

Is there anything you can not let go of that you no longer wear? Why? What makes it so special?

And what do you do with old clothes?

I go through my clothes about twice a year. I am terrible about throwing anything away. My clothes have to be in horrendus condition before I throw it away. There's always an excuse. "Yeah I know I have paint all over these jeans but what if I have to paint again?" That's my problem. Anytime I throw something out like holey socks my DH will say "hey pigs are flying today". I'm that bad.

If something is in good condition and I either just don't wear it anymore or it looks bad on me I donate it to the local Thrift store.

if it hasn't been worn for a year then it must go. my sister used to be my size so she used to get everything mine, now she's not. so everything goes to goodwill. for my kids clothes (most of them are always well kept) are given to my niece. since i have twins, and buy everything in two, the niece gets the 'newer' looking item, the other goes to goodwill. the oldest item i have is my wedding dress (5 years).

I purge twice per year (usually spring/fall).

I donate my clothes to a local charity.

I have a few things I can't seem to toss:

The Levi's I wore in HS (mostly I'm just vain because I can still fit into them)
Some vintage stuff I've collected over the years (sooo beautiful and so well made, but I don't really "dress up" that much any more)
The Blahniks I wore all summer to various friend's weddings in the late 80's early 90's (hurt my feet now!)

Well, I've got a garbage bag in the corner of my room. I've got to get rid of a few things!

Every 3 months I get rid of anything I don't like or it doesn't fit quite right any longer. Then again, I'm a neat freak and hate closet/drawer clutter. I give everything to my daughter who either keeps it or passes it on to someone else. I wear a whole lot of black and white with only a few colorful items....so this is easier for me to do.

I think every time you buy something new you should try to get rid of something old. Especially if you shop in bulk. If you want to avoid overcrowding, you can't just bring new clothes in without getting rid of some of the old clothing you already have. I say purge every time it becomes absolutely necessary. Don't be afraid to do this. You will get more...

I "tell" myself to put something in the donate pile when I buy (doesn't usually happen) - I pack up clothes at the end of summer and end of winter so I go through clothes then. I have a stack: things that just didn't work (I don't like trying on clothes in the store), things that just fit "weird", etc. - I usually check out freecycle and see what folks are wanting, donate to Goodwill, give to a neighbor who's church has a free clothes closet.

Bottom line: I mostly purge at end of summer and end of winter, but I do try to be somewhat realistic throughout the year and add to the stack.

I get rid of things when they look out of shape or tired. If I am feeling creative I cut it up and make something else out of it(re-dye,deconstructed, purses or just "rag bag" for t-shirts)
