Default How will the recession impact fashion? Share your thoughts!

I just read an article in the NY Times speculating on whether or not the current recession would affect hemlines the way the Great Depression did. (Hemlines got longer in the 30s compared to the roaring 20s.)

So that got me wondering -- What impact will the economic downturn have on overall fashion trends?

An article in the L.A. Times says that expensive designer denim jeans are becoming a thing of the past. Does that mean boy jeans will become more popular?

Are you spending less on clothes? Are you dressing differently? What are you seeing out there on the streets and in the office?

Odd that the hemline went longer. You would think that they would go shorter so people would be paying the same price for less used fabric.

I don't know where styles will go, but it IS possible people may pick different priorities than feeling they have to keep up with every new fashion trend that comes along. It is great to look stylish, but it can easily eat up our finances and wrongfully be used to validate self esteem. Hopefully, we will all find a realistic middle point.

This is a really interesting thread topic. I have no additional rep points to give you again today......................

Well, I know that I have started buy a LOT more clothes from Salvation Army. I'd like to get a pair of boyfriend jeans.

I was buying only at Ann Taylor and never bothered with the outlets, but now I am buying mostly from the outlet store...can't believe how much cheaper it is and the quality is still good. AND I ask for more of a discount. Just got an additional 15% off at Ann Taylor Outlet b/c I asked.

I live in Florida. How many shorts, tank tops, and flip flops can you possibly buy?

I don't know about the fashions, but I have definitely stopped buying clothes unless I absolutely need something, and I will go for used or sales only. I've also been selling what I don't need to second hand stores. I don't think most Americans will get over their materialism though so maybe clothes will be of cheaper quality and for example, places like Old Navy will see more business than Banana Republic or the Gap.

I heard on CNN a month or so again that big couture designers are slashing their everyday prices by 15-25% to accomodate the spending cuts. If I am not mistaken, Chanel, Lacroix and Marc Jacobs were mentioned...Badgley and Mischka, perhaps...

Please! When I think of what some of these designers try to charge for clothes. What a joke!
