Right before the movie
Titanic came out, I was buying "old" (1880s-1930s) Bohemian garnet jewelry on eBay. I have some lovely old "garnet gold" (9k, 10k) chandelier necklaces and earrings - and then the movie came out, created a run on it and I've never been able to afford it for casual purchases again. Grrr.
The color of the old garnets is just about unmatched by today's garnets, which tend to have a brownish cast, even the pyropes, which are supposed to be purplish.
A lot of the older stuff is sort of garish by modern tastes, but there are some delicate, beautiful chandelier-style necklaces out there. They used to be the the 100s range, and now the good ones are in the 1000s range.
