Very much this. It's for kids who try to look "tough" and "edgy" or whatever.

You pretty much never see Ed Hardy worn by members of the gay community, that's how you know it's not cool or trendy. lol

It's always strange to me when something priced so high can look so cheap.

There's nothing good or bad about the clothes themselves. However, the clothes become symbols of a particular lifestyle: good looking, immediate gratification guidos, guidettes, WASP wanna-be's in Miami, Dwight Howard losing again in the playoffs, and so on.
Either you associate the brand with "the good life" or with a detestable hedonism, or feel that you've been shunned by the "beautiful people," and so revel in hating the brand "they" wear.
It sounds so high school clique-ish. At some point, it's not worth hating. Correct?

Correct.
But it still makes the tool-bags, guidos, guidettes, bros and bro hos very easy to identify, which is nice. Makes it easier to avoid people with ****ty attitude, I wish other personality traits I dislike were as easily identifiable.

Also "afflicted" by the "big price tag for looking kinda cheap" syndrome, IMO. But I like clothing that's simple, classic, and well-contstructed, regardless of who's making it.

Ecko/Affliction/Monarchy are in the same vein as Ed Hardy/Christian Audigier. Those labels may have been cutting-edge & trendy 5 or 7 yrs ago, but nowdays they've got that guido/douchebag/poser vibe, like you're trying way too hard. It's the kind of clothes a divorced balding 40-yr old guy would dress to go clubbing so he can score with girls half his age
