When I wore 'socks' with flats, it was for work and in stead of tights or net hosiery...I preferred a snug and lightweight stretch cotton, rayon lace or crochet...hard to find because most everything is generic nylon. Over-the-knee is fun, but they never stay put...

I think fishnets scrunched down are a good funky, but that's just me.

Nowadays there are some cool low-cut peds (footies) out there that look fine peeking out from under your shoe, so keep looking. 'Come a long way from French terry pom-pom sport socks.

If we are talking ballerina flats, then absolutely no socks. If you can't go barefoot or have foot sweat issues, then wear those hidden ped things that you can't see.
