In contrast, while I'm not a huge tattoo fan it doesn't bother me at all whether someone has one. Whether I draw a conclusion based on the tattoo depends more on where/what it is than its existence. It just seems like it's not as big a deal to the 20s-30s crowd as it does to the previous generation.

Okayyy now. I'm of your parent's age and do not feel as strongly about a couple tats here and there and esp in inconspicous places. Mind you, that could depend on how tasteful that tattoo may be. It'd be pretty raunchy if someone had a type of tattoo circling the um... perhaps, I'll let your imagination take over from there? Anyways, tattoos of cartoon characters, zodiac signs, etc on the body [modestly done]don't bother me in the least. I don't have any but that doesn't mean that I hadn't thought of it.

Well I don't understand men either, but this doesn't mean I don't like them..considering I married one.
Tattoos aren't meant for you to understand them if they were then everyone would have one.
Each and every tattoo has a meaning behind them.
One reason might be..Just for looks (which is a silly reason but some ppl get them for this one reason)
Another-could be as a memorial. Friends and family who have passed away are often memorialized through tattoos.
Another- Children and relationships are a popular reason for getting a tattoo.
Another- Many people will have tattoos designed to commemorate special events experienced during their lifetimes.
Another-Tattoos also represent spiritual status for many cultures.
Another-They can also be a symbol for social ranking
Another- Many tattoos are designed to reflect heritage
Who knows the reasons of why people get tattoos..but like I said they are not meant for you to understand they are only meant for the person who wears them to understand.

Why would you care? Tattoos are personal choice, which I think we still have in this country, last time I checked...

People fear what they don't understand. They don't want to understand what they fear.

Yep. And you get to deal with being told you're wrong for treating people differently because of choices that don't affect you or anyone else in any way.

Why is there even a negative connotation associated with tattoos at all?
Sure, we choose to get tattoos. But why must it be seen in a negative light?
Seriously, someone please answer this question. What exactly is WRONG with a tattoo?
I think you all have just been brainwashed into it by this systems subjective social norms. But there is no deeper meaning or reason behind this negativity.

I think that most people still associate tattoos with convicts, bikers, prostitutes etc. and that kind of thought pattern is hard to break. Even today, you see people who are doing bad things and they just happen to have tattoos...rappers, convicts (again...), and people who are involved in shenanigans on tv and in the media. The association that's made is 'that person has tattoos... that person is tough...that person could and probably would hurt me'. Personally, I think LA Ink, Miami Ink etc. did more to hurt the tattoo community than it did to help. It shows people who are involved in the tattoo industry as vapid, shallow, stupid and filled with drama.
What I think most people fail to realize is that many 'normal' type people have tattoos. If I didn't have my tattoos I would be as boring and as normal as anyone else. I rarely drink, I don't do drugs (not even smoking cigarettes) I have an 8-5 m-f job, I drive a Kia Spectra for gosh sakes and live with my long time fiancee and our two dogs in a little house by the beach. By all means I live a very normal lifestyle, but I have a love for tattoos and tattoo style art. It's just my thing
Before I got tattooed below the elbow (it's a big step, for those who have been) my tattoo artist sat me down and made sure I understood the societal ramifications of doing so. I did, and although there may be people who don't even want to talk to me because of my skin art, there are quite a few people who come up to me and want to know why I did it and what it's like. I've made quite a few friends because of comments on my tattoos... I've probably made more friends than I've lost.

Before I got my tattoos I thought they were kind of distasteful. But of course I never had such a negative attitude towards them like some of these ppl on here do. My grandfather had Navy Tattoos and I loved looking at them and listening to the reasons of why he got them..but just knew getting a tattoo just wasn't for me. A friend of mine once told me, People who have a hate/fear of tattoos are just jealous people because they didn't or couldn't bare to get a tattoo. Well I come to realize that this was true. People who look at you with a disgusting look on their faces isn't because they think tattoos are repulsive or disgusting it is because deep down inside their minds they are thinking "how could one put ink on themselves they look silly but it is kind of cool and I wished I was brave enough to do this"..being uptight and very conservative person is what kept me from being who I am. I was very close-minded and didn't like anything...kind of like being a little rich girl that needed to let her hair down and grow out of this gross stage in my life. And plus I had always thought walking into a tattoo shop was like the worst thing in the world..cause they were nasty dirty ppl.. Well did I find out wrong!! Wow a Tattoo Artist and the place they work in is very clean, the artist are actually nice and very normal casual people. Our Tattoo Artist whom we have known for the past 7 years is our very good friend..our daughter and his daughter grew up together..we have cookouts together..etc.. Unfortunately his daughter was diagnosed with a Brain Tumor last summer and she past away this past Jan. How heart wrenching for this family to lose a child and my daughter to lose her best friend. Corbin was only 8 years old and passed away due to something you can't control. My point is... Tattoo Artist are NOT nasty dirt stinky rude inconsiderate ppl like some think they are.. they lead very normal lives, go through struggles just like we do with, have nice homes, drive nice cars.. send their kids to school just like you so called "Normal" people do. Everyone has a reason for not liking someone but tattoos is just plain silly..it isn't going to jump off their body to yours if you get close and it doesn't make them bad ppl..they just have some added color to their body. I say you uptight conservative ppl need to let your hair down have a mixed drink and get over it. Stop being so self centered towards others and maybe you will be liked. Stop harping on ppl with tattoos. Maybe if you would get your panties out of a wad and get to know someone with tattoos you would not be so disgusted and repulsed over them. I realize that ppl who hate/fear ppl with tattoos are the same ppl who thinks they are better than everyone else and in reality they really aren't!.. they are really self centered ignorant people who has no real aspect about life and they are repulsed by anything that doesn't suit them or their needs. These are the types of boring ppl who live in a sheltered life and need to get out and have some fun. These are the types of ppl who judge you even if you don't have tattoos, they judge you because of the clothes you wear or your the home you live in, maybe even the car you drive because they have nothing else better to do in their life accept judge others. Just hope they don't get judged in the end for judging others.
