29 or 30 for jeans or shorts. For pants that I'll tuck a shirt into, a 30 or 31 is good. Always easier to tighten the belt than try to stretch the pants or have the side pockets splayed out because they are too tight.

I wear 30-32 but can also with a belt wear 32-34. My actual waist measurement is 31". Im 6' 1" tall.
