Tallness is associated with power and intimidation - even if it's not always true, it still gives that impression. In general, society has always found tallness to be an attractive feature.
I have read a statistic somewhere that tall people in general earn more money for the same job as a small person - being tall stands for success, discipline, power and people expect more of them in the workplace. I am 1,8m tall and still try to find the workplace where I get paid more Clothes just look better on a tall model than on a small one.
I'm a 6' tall female and I completely believe that being taller gives you an edge. I work in a VERY male oriented career and being eye level with guys is certainly helpful.
Logically I think its because you can live and be thin on 1200-1400 calories if you are tall. If you are 5 foot its not going to be quite so easy to stay thin at that. Plus the visual elegance of height. If gives a feeling. Think of any painting you saw a small square of and then saw the full size in person. Its like it wraps around you and embraces you instead of just looking at it. Its really only the high fashion that needs them tall. Its all about the shows' artistic impact to create a dreamy fantasy like feeling around the line. Extremes mean impact. Average is ignored. It does not blow people away to see what they see everyday.

1200-1400 calories a day is not that much, even for someone short to average in height. The average adult female is supposed to consume 2000 calories. I'm 5ft and weigh 100 lbs at the moment (which is fairly thin, my waist is still about 26 inches) - according to livestrong.com (based on my height, age, current weight and activity level which is pretty much zero at the moment) I need to consume 1585 calories just to maintain that weight. So 1200-1400 calories would be exactly what I'd consume if I was trying to lose weight and be even thinner. Unless I started exercising, in which case I may not even need to eat less calories. So I can only imagine that 1200-1400 calories for someone who is taller than average would be very unhealthy and not enough calories even for someone who wants to be thin.
Of course it does depend on one's metabolism, activity level and also what formula is being used to calculate the daily intake needed based on height, weight and activity level - but in general, I think you're greatly underestimating the amount of calories a human body needs.
That said, exact numbers aside, I do agree that it's easier for someone who is tall to consume the same amount of calories of someone shorter and not gain weight/be thinner. Taller people need more calories so by logic, they should be able to eat more calories and still be thin.
I did not notice that taller people are usually thinner than smaller. I am tall and I am hungry all day and gain weight immediately. I don't think there is a difference to shorter people.
