I moved to Florida last year and since the temps went up I've been wearing capris, skirts, shorts, and sleeveless tops, never thinking there was anything wrong with this.

I was recently informed by an acquaintance that I should stop wearing shorts and that I only have a couple years to wear sleeveless tops because I am "too old". She tells me that shorts are a big fashion no-no for all people and women are not supposed to wear sleeveless tops after 40.

What the heck is that about? Is that true? I don't intend to alter my wardrobe, it just seems odd that those would be actual fashion rules. I think I look just fine. Maybe I'm just too old to realize what the trends are anymore.

Tell her she's "too narrow-minded."

Its FL...all bets are off!

Two words:
Angela Bassett

She is 51

In this photo 48:

(from wiki)

I think she looks great. Better than some 20 somethings!

Who cares? In weather like that, I think it's completely unreasonable for people to expect you to cover up - you could easily overheat! Even my Nan wore shorts into her 80s during the summer. Some people need to just mind their own business.

Angela does look good! I need to start hitting the weights again so my arms will look like that.

Alright, I will continue on without concern.

Now if we were talking halter tops and short shorts no--but something like walking/bermuda shorts and nice fitting tanks--what's the problem?

Ack! No! No halter tops or short shorts here!

My shorts are shorter than bermuda shorts, but definitely not short shorts. I have nice legs (except for that tattoo I SO with I hadn't gotten when I was young), so I think they look fine, but I still wouldn't go any shorter.

Just make sure you wear plenty of sunscreen if you expose your skin. You don't want to end up looking like that leathery old roommate in There's Something About Mary:

Eeeeew. Yep, want to avoid that. I don't wear a ton of sunscreen, unless I'm going to be out and without shade for a period of time. I seek out the shade instead. I do like to have a bit of a tan. Not too much. There is no shortage of older women who look like leathery handbags down here.
