White dress can be see-through in many special event lighting conditions. After purchasing a white dress, check the transparency factor well. To do this, pull up one layer of the dress over-skirt along with any underskirts or crinolines that may help reduce transparency. Hold these layers in front of a white light (do not touch material to a hot bulb, be careful) and check the transparency by holding a red fabric between the bulb and skirting. If you see pink, be sure to purchase an opaque half-slip for the white dress. To reduce transparency, consider selecting a white dress of good weight fabric having some weave pattern (such as a satin shantung or a textured silk).

And select undergarments/shapewear that is as close as possible to your own skintone. I've seen a lot of that in the better stores. Better choice for a slip than white.
