Default Black Families in NW AR

I am a black female, and I have a great opportunity in Springdale Arkanasas. These post are pretty scary for me. I currently live in the Midwest, and we have good relationships in my community with all races. Will I be welcomed?

I can't find one black person in springdale, rogers, or fayettevile to respond back on any media (facebook, twitter, google, Arkansas website, Ask.com, or any other site to say they live in this area. I just want to go live in peace if the job comes through and not feel like I'm going to a sun down state as it was called in the past. My family is a rainbow of people. Can anyone answer if a black family will be accepted in these cities and where is a good place to search for housing. I'm so tired of people not liking each other for the color of their skin!

I am not black, but I can pretty much assure blacks are accepted in Rogers, Springdale and Fayetteville as well as Bentonville and Bella Vista.

I spent a few weeks in the area and was shocked how "white" Northwest AR is and how service low wage jobs where done by white people. I usually find minorities move into a community if they hear from others how welcoming a place is to them. That fact that NW Arkansas is mostly white is a message maybe.

I would say "you get out of it what you put into it". Be a good neighbor. Be a good citizen. Volunteer. Get involved at your children's schools. Raise your kids to follow your example. Etc, etc. You will be accepted just fine. NW Arkansas contains a lot of transplants from around the country due to the presence of Walmart, and thus the general populace has a more accepting attitude towards others.

sorry, you are about 100% off base on this one. The only part you have right is, yes, NWA is predominently white as you put it. Other than that, we have about every nationality, race and religion there is, living here. You see as many mixed marriages as you do blacks for that matter and with rare exceoption, I have never seen or heard a biggoted remark except from a few Rednecks. living in some of the very rural areas, like my X grandson in law. You probably see more prejudice in large cities than in this area. I don't think spending a few weeks in an area constitutes knowing how the residence feel. WHen you mention how few minorities you saw that indicates you didn't have your eyes wide open. The highest population of people from the Marshall Islands, live in NWA. The number of Hispanics continues to increase. There are more Indians and mid easterners all the time, that is why we now have a number of Indian restaurants and grocery stores. This goes for Asians as well. I could go on and on. Of course you don't see as many minorities as you do in say, Dallas, why? Because we are not as large. Do you have any idea how many minorities attend the University or NWACC?

Fayetteville is where you want to be. The mindset of the two cities is very different eventhough they are right next to each other. You probably will never have any issues living in Springdale and will be accepted but most of the black population (what little there is) lives in Fayetteville.

What about stylist and barbers that are black owned? Do they have any in these areas? I would think it would be since the colleges have black students. Of course, this is not to say I couldn't get my hair done by another nationality. I am curious where blacks go for their hair. These things seem minor, but I just can't find nothing on any black businesses other that a fabulous soul food restarant

Am I just a blinded person? I do not see all this prejudice stuff going on and I live out with rednecks in Eastern OK. Now I spend tons of time in NWA beings my parents retired there. I see all nationalities. I think if you can afford the place you live in and keep it up your neighbors wouldn't care what nationality you were including white.

I will preface this by saying that I'm a middle-aged, middle-class, centrist white male. Basically a guy who's never had any real problems, doesn't know real racism, etc.

I would say that a black person living in the main suburban/urban areas along 540 won't have many issues. Fayetteville and Springdale are somewhat more diverse than Rogers/Bentonville and you might not feel so out of place.

Outside of those areas things get more variable...the days of lynchings and sundown towns are thankfully gone, but things are not perfect. You may get the occasional nasty comment, odd look, and be made to feel uncomfortable. Understand that much of Arkansas is still rural, white, poor, poorly educated, parochial/good ole boy, and conservative Christian. That is not a good starter mix for getting a black-friendly culture.
