Hello,
I'm just looking for some opinions about moving to the fayetteville area with two young children (2,5) I will be attending U of A for 2 or 3 years and my fiance and I will be buying a house in the $85-$95 price range. Well we can't decide what town to move to? Fayetteville seems to have more expensive homes, but the convenience to U of A seems to be worth it. Also, we are considering Siloam Springs bc I have family there but I worry the commute will be too far and I won't be able to make it to my classes on time. I am really considering Fayetteville bc we don't know for sure where my fiance will be working he works in the accounting field so we are hoping for Walmart Corp offices or similar. We come from a small Oklahoma town and are really scared of being overwhelmed by the size and traffic of this area. ALso the crime rates and safety for children? Would you reccomend Fayetteville for young children or Siloam SPrings? Also is the traffic and travel time to U of A during morning hours really long?

I think the drive from Siloam Springs to the U of A would get old really fast. If your fiance is looking to work in Bentonville, and you are going to be attending the U of A and don't mind a little drive, I think you might want to take a closer look at Elm Springs, maybe. It's a back way to both Fayetteville and Bentonville, pretty easy access to 540, not far from Siloam Springs and is a small town.

DC said pretty much what I was thinking, you might also think about Famington and West Fork. Fayetteville is awesome but much more crowded, more traffic and I doubt you will get much in the price range you are thinking of. In fact you might have a little trouble finding anything decent or $85000. Good luck. I am sure your fiance will find employment with all the companies we have in the area. It might not be WalMart, but there are lots of others. COX Cable, Hunt trucking, Tysons, etc.
A little bias here--if you're going to the UofA, you'll want to be as close as you can be. The morning and afternoon commute on I-540 is horrible. You'll be scared out of your wits coming from a small town (I try to avoid 540 like the plague).
Yes, a commute will get very old. We have friends who work for WMT. They've been in F'ville a couple of years but are now moving back to Rogers because the commute was too much.
The downside to F'vill--you're going to have a hard time finding a house for under $100K. How about renting a place for a couple of years? Sure you're not being equity, but then again you'll have a landlord that will take care of maintenance, etc.
Final suggestion--tell your finance to check out Tyson Foods website. They now list all the job openings online. He apply online too.

Our granddaughter and her husband, both commute from West Fork and i know a few that commute to Fayetteville from Farmington. It really isn't that bad. I woiuld consentrate on all the small towns around Fayetteville before looking there. I just think your housing budget can't handle Fayetteville even if you decide to rent.
Thank You, I will tell him to look at Tyson jobs that's a great idea. Rent would be so much to pay, I'm waiting for our house loan approval to go through, I'm hoping we can get one for up to $120 K because I think that will do us just fine, springdale has a lot of homes for $80-90K but I can't bring myself to "like" Springdale. I grew up in Lowell but that was 15 years ago and it's grown so much more now! I've found a few homes in Fayetteville, we can always redo flooring or small things if we need too. Seems like there are some small ones for about $90 in Fayetteville. and I think with the cost of gas and not haivng to fight traffic would be so much worth a $100 a month more house payment.
My only concern with small towns is the schools.... are they as good for sports? My daughter loves ballet and I want to be able to have ballet, cheerleading classes, etc. Do they do as much with them in small schools? Also we love to go places, I want a town with great parks bc they are free and my kids love them.
You can find a house or two in Fayetteville in your price range (if you get the higher loan amount ~$120, it will definitely give you more options). The only caveat, be very careful to check out the neighborhood first. Find out which school zone any home is located in.
I agree about Farmington and the other communities in that direction, like Prairie Grove. If I weren't leaving Arkansas soon, I would probably move out there myself. I'm rapidly tiring of the traffic and overall noise in Fayetteville. Overpopulation completely destroys your quality of life, and this place was never meant to contain so many people. My advice? Stay on the outskirts of it all.
I would not do the drive from Siloam Springs everyday for anything. I absolutely loath driving through that town. And as others have mentioned, if you are from a small town and unaccustomed to trafiifc, you will want to avoid 540 if at all possible. I'm from Houston and driving on 540 can make me crazy.
