Good luck!!! I'm so sorry to hear about resistance from your daughter. The unknown is very scary.

I'm on my 4th wave of family members from California out visiting us for the summer... They all love visiting and want to move in. Aaaaah!

Anyway, I AM SO EXCITED and so happy for everyone's advice to this spoiled California girl, lol. A little nervous for humidity and snow, but also excited. And Nita, we are coming with a pre-approval hoping to write an offer this weekend. I still really would like to stay in Bentonville, but I feel like I should at LEAST check out Fayetteville and Rogers to rule them out. I just don't want to be super far from the basically free fitness center (yes, it is a position with Wal-Mart, I'm sure you guessed!) haha. The fitness center, for me, was a huge bonus, is that crazy? I am so excited for this change in my life, and I already have my Christmas trip back home planned. It's going to be great!!!
I hated my family life as a 13 year-old, so when I was told I was being shipped off near Mexico in South Texas, I was neutral to pleased.

However, it seems like your daughter has a different outlook on family life, and enjoys her environment. I remember as a child her age when I latched onto something I enjoyed, I was very upset to consider changing that, even if the change was technically superior. Typically, I was all butthurt over it for a little while, and then acted like it was my own idea and loved it.

If it's a good fit for her, I bet she will be snotty about it for a week or two (maybe less), and then really start enjoying it. That's how I was as a kid, anyway.

What fitness center? I just joined Anytime Fitness, as I saw they had a gym up there when I visited. Hope it's as good as the Anytime here.

It's an awesome place, and I hope to move soon, too. The ATF only needs to approve 2 more things for me to get rolling, as well as the 5320.20 transfer form for the actual move. All that's holding me back

I am so glad to hear you have made the decision: now find the house. Do look in Hanover area and all around there. It is very family friendly, lots of kids, including teens and close to everything. There are other sub divisions in that general area that are also great. I am guessing that is where you will find what you want unless you can find something right in the downtown area.

As for guessing WalMart, actually I didn't. I have been following your story and repeating it to my daughter. She remembers what is was like moving in her teens. You made a mention, one time about Rogers being close to where he would be employed; we were thinking Tysons. Regardless, keep us posted and tell your daughter this is a great time to relocate. She will be one of the new gals at schools and kids already living in the area love to meet new kids. I am also guessing, if she is a good swimmer she will be really good here. Our kids swam for Arden Hills swim team way back when. Do they still exist?

Good luck, don't worry about the humidity. So far we have had a delightful summer. of course it will change any day I am sure. It is in the low 60s right now; today's high will be about 78.

Keep us posted and try and get settled before school starts. I am sure that is your goal.

Wow, yes, Arden Hills has become one of the best USA swim teams in the greater Sacramento area. Our team has had several families join coming from AH. We swim against them at meets up here. In fact, their current head coach used to be MY coach (one of them) when I swam for Blackhawk. How funny!
We are already looking to register with the Sharks here (coming from our team, the Tigersharks and Aquasharks, it is perfect!) - I think once she gets settled into her new team and makes some friends, I know she will be fine. Our plan is to spend large amounts of time here in the summer so she can train with her current team. We travel to San Diego every year for swim championships in December, so she has that to look forward to (she can fly back and swim with them). I'm doing what I can to ease the pain, but I have no concerns about her finally accepting it once she makes new friends at school and in swimming.

Yes, my goal is to write an offer THIS weekend and hope to close within 30 days! Plus, we are listing our house here next week. I have a lot to do! I am hoping if she misses the first few days of school, it is not a big deal. In fact, I think she likes the idea of being the even newer girl, a few days late to school. What a little brat!

Glad to hear weather has been mild. I saw it said 81% humidity the other day, and it sounded bad, but I don't even really know what that actually feels like. LOL. It has been in the hundreds here this week. It is miserable. Plus, we are in a drought. I'm living in A/C this week, patching and painting, and doing paperwork getting ready for the move.

The Wal-Mart fitness center. It is unbelievable. You do have to be an employee or family member to go, but it is incredible, like 2 warehouse-sized centers with indoor pools, tennis courts, track, all the group x classes you'd expect, cardio, weights, and kids activities like gymnastics and dance all at a price that feels essentially free. I was one of the anti-Wal-Mart snobs for most of my life, but after visiting the museum and reading about Sam Walton and his vision, not to mention what they've done for the community of NWA, I have so much respect for that family, for that man especially, and what their goal is as far as truly taking care of their employees whom they consider family. I completely have eaten my words about Wal-Mart (though not some of the customers that I've seen on the internet, lol), but the company as a whole is pretty incredible. Did you see the photo of them after Hurricane Katrina? Look it up if you haven't. I am glad to be a part of company that cares so much (but IMO needs to do more to counter the negative propaganda that the press constantly perpetuates!)

Anyway, I digress. I am a fitness junkie, and that was a DEFINITE bonus on the to move or not to move list that I had going. I have seen Anytime Fitness before, I think they are out here as well. Hey, get a P/T job as a greeter to join, hahaha. I kid. Or marry a sugar mama who works for Wal-Mart corporate I will put in a good word!

I'm sure I'll post updates once we house hunt. I probably shouldn't be too specific on a public forum, but the information I receive in return has been invaluable.

Really? Very cool. What sorts of things do you do with your family when they come out? I've been trying to think of that already. I know there is so much, where to start?

My oldest should come around! I found a beautiful Victorian downtown, built in 1880, that I just fell in love with, and was hoping to tour it this weekend, but it went pending yesterday I showed her, and of course she hated it. But it was AMAZING. And completely remodeled and right downtown. I am still sad about it. She is focused exclusively on Rogers for now, because she has seen homes in Shadow Valley and Pinnacle and wants all the flash and pomp. I have told her I'm fairly certain we are looking only at B-ville. Hopefully she will be happy wherever we land.

She will be fine; as for your feelings about WalMart and the Walton's, I wish everyone would become familiar with the family history and what they have done for our community, our country and even worldwide. I too, did not think much of them or the corporation until we moved here and had a chance to see the positive side. People hear the stories about how they treat their employees, but they haven't bothered to examine what is true and what is media spread. They do not understand the concept behind the corporation.

So now I have put my 2 cents worth in, you get ready to fly out here, tell your daughter she is lucky to have an experience like this and find that perfect house. I know you will.

I suppose I'm old school. I like some dumbells, a few machines, and something for cardio. We have the equivalent of what the WalMart gym sounds like a little south of me (Red's in Lafayette) Red Lerille's Health and Racquet Club

The whole reason "people hate walmart" isn't due to lack of charity, etc. but rather because they are actively trying to replace mom and pop stores (they create little "wal-marts" which fly under the radar as stores of other name and emulate little places and slowly kill them because of economies of scale). They have replaced family business, they have killed knowledgeable sales-reps and replaced them with 9-5'ers who know nothing about the products beside literature, etc.

THAT is why "people hate walmart". Not because they represent money, or think they are stingy, but because they are destroying small business, specialists, and people that many consider "salt of the earth" types.

Some of this is just byproduct of what Wal-Mart is and economies of scale...other parts of it are Wal-Mart actively trying to kill these industries by making stores that emulate them on the surface, trying to kill of the little corner grocers, e tc.
