Hey all you NWA Gardeners:

Is it possible to have bright red maple trees, Burning Bush (winged euonymous), peonies, magnolia, hosta, Iris, DayLilies, Roses, Crape Myrtle, Hibiscus and other usually Midwest plants here?? How is the dirt? Does everything have to be amended? Thinking about leaving the (usually) dry desert for some place greener.
Thanks !!

Yes. All of the plants listed thrive in NWA. Many people, though, have issues with the rocky soil, and the amount of clay. There are streaks through the area of rich soil, though. My house is situated on one of those streaks. No rocks, no clay. Just good dirt. And my plants are out of control. One of my crape myrtles is a towering 25 feet. I have a holly that I've cut down to 4 feet tall a couple of years ago that is again higher than my rooftop.

Generally, the soil in NWA is on the poor side. Folks in Bella Vista have to deal with very rocky soil but the clay content in other areas are not really good for drainage.

Amending the soil will give you a good start, You can just mix up some peat and 2 types of compost and make your own but Nitron industries in Johnson sells a special blend that I've heard grows stuff like crazy. 2 of my neighbors swear by it. I couldn't afford it.

My late aunt, who lived in a hilly older neighborhood in Fayetteville, had a wonderful daylily garden -I have a few daylily descendants from her garden, fortunately, but hers were much more diverse and profuse, while not at all demanding. Her street trees were mature maples which held their gold-to-red fall color well into November. The next-door neighbors had beautiful crepe myrtles.

If you have a green thumb, Fayetteville will be a good place for gardening, despite its sometimes rocky soil.

The problem with maple trees is the bark on young trees tend to spilt during the wide temperature swings we get in the late winter.

Wrapping the trunks might help
