The cluster is real. I have seen it with multiple family members who have had rare cancers. They have had cancers that occur in less than 2% of the population. I have seen it in children. They have all the poultry farms. Lots of kids with cancer and leukemia. Most people know at most one child with cancer or leukemia. I have known 5.

I would say you are able to find affordable newer housing in PG due to the fact that it did not become over built like Lowell, Rogers, Bentonville and Centerton. PG, Farmington and Fayetteville did experience a boom, however they seem to have kept over building to a minimum. I know Fayetteville controls a lot of the building that goes on in Farmington because Farmington gets water, sewer and trash from Fayetteville. I do not know if that is the case for PG but I would suspect that Fayetteville probably has some say in the matter.

These 4 cities are only overbuilt in the region conjoined by all 4 of them. This statement's a gross generalization of that fact. To simplify it, the overbuilt area is a semi circle covering the NW hemisphere about 5 miles from XNA airport (just clarifying for others - I'm sure you already know this)

I am going to bump this up instead of creating a new thread.

We will be moving to NWA this spring. I will be working in Fayetteville. We have horses and have been looking for a house with a little bit of property (several acres). Prairie Grove has some homes that fit this criteria, but this cancer cluster thing is scary to someone with 2 very young children.

The school district is pretty big compared to the school districts where we live now, so is the entire area affected?

If this is due to arsenic in the air from the chicken industry, wouldn't it be more systemic across all NWA?

Any info would be greatly appreciated as google searches bring up sites talking about how horrible PG is due to the cancer, and others just talking about how one of the primary lawsuits was overturned in favor of the defendants.

Thank you in advance.

This thread is the first thing I've ever heard about a "cancer cluster". I don't think there's a true "stigma" around Prairie Grove. I know a wealthy family who raised their children there.

I noticed a few of the posters in this thread were 1 post accounts.

Talk to 100 people in NWA about PG and I doubt any of them mention a "cancer cluster".

Edit: The one website I just read talked about it possibly being due to a form of chicken feed used that hasn't been used in a decade. but even that website says there hasn't been any pediatric cancers in PG since '04.

I think Rock Climber explained it as clearly as anyone could. You might find things you do not like about the area, but a cancer cluster, not to worry for one second. If you can get what you want in land, for heavens sake come, buy and enjoy. Remember it is always wise not to believe everything you read. Even studies can be very flawed or biased.

My sister just purchased a new home in PG. My parents live close by. Nice town, sadly it is building subdivisions instead of conforming to the old town design.

Quiet little suburb of Fayetteville with decent schools.

Thanks Everyone for the info. Very helpful. There are two homes in PG we are going to check out when we make our first house hunting trip here in a week or so.
