We're retiring military looking to homestead...somewhere. Fayetteville / NWA is high on our list of possibilities and we will be visiting in late April to check it out.

We've never been to the area but like what we've researched so far. We're looking for good neighborhoods with large lots, close to shopping, older places for rehab are fine.

Of course, we're trying to make the best of our time there, so we could use some suggestions about where to start:

Any suggestions for communities around Fayetteville?
And neighborhoods within those communities?
Places to avoid?

Ok, I'll take a stab at this since no one else has...The thing is ALL of Fayetteville and surrounding cities seem to have what you are looking for-Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers/Bentonville, Bella Vista all offer a plentiful amount of large lots . This area- like most of the country, has real estate galore for sale right now. Regardless of what kind of home, price range, etc-they have it- and chances are whatever it is it will cost you less here than most places.

The "larger" cities here are surrounded by smaller communties that may also fit your needs. Some of these would be Farmington, Elkins, West Fork, Prairie Grove, Siloam Springs, etc....It would all depend on what sort of feel you wanted- a small town feel (plenty of these) or a more urban populated feel (at least for Arkansas). I could get more specific if I had a better idea of what you are looking for.

Me personally if I had the money/knowledge to do a renovation- I would try to purchase in a "fixer upper" in the Fayetteville Historic Distric. They are a little hard to come by, but most of these homes have been renovated and they are AMAZING. You also have plenty of choices when it come to nice, brand new homes.(tons)

I can't think of any "place to avoid" here- it is generally VERY safe as a region. There may be a few rentals that are a little run down mixed in here and there (college town), but overall I can't name one neighborhood that is just plain "bad". Beautiful homes in every part of the city.

Thanks for the response. We're planning a trip toward the end of this month.

Try Lochmoor Club in Bentonville.
Bella Vista is more of a retirement community. Very pretty "up" there.

Good Luck!
