The Mona Lisa has a protective covering, as do a lot of famous artworks.

Sadly this happens to often and such works are now thankfully protected.

The destruction of artwork stretches "back to 455 AD when the Vandals invaded Rome, destroyed numerous artworks, and became forever associated with the wilful defacement of art".

The Vandals may have their name attached to pointless destruction but the Romans did it to themselves long before by destroying images of Emperors that fell into disfavor
