It might, but it's not ideal. Platties like warmer water than goldfish do.

What if you just keep it room temperature all year round.

I did that with my 55 gallon heavily planted freshwater tank, and it worked out fine - but the tank was acrylic, which holds in heat better than glass does. The lights over the tank heated up the water during the day, and the tank maintained a stable temperature in the low 70s without a heater. But I don't know how well that would work with a smaller tank, or a glass tank. In any case, goldfish prefer temps in the 60s, while plat ties like temps in the mid-to-upper 70s. So one fish or the other is going to be living in a less-than-optimal temperature range. I'm not saying it can't work, just that it's not ideal.

Keep the temperature in the lower 70s and everyone is happy.

I agree with the cooler temps, as both will survive together, not ideally, but will co-habit. What size of a tank are we talking about?

I just don't understand why anyone would need to make BOTH suffer just for their own pleasure..."its not ideal but it should work"
or...you know...you could NOT be selfish and just stick to one or the other and provide the best environment you can for the species you choose...

oh wait..thats sooo not what you wanted to hear...id say buy a dragon, and see if hatll fit in the tank with your goldfish, itll look cool or something...

Platy's do better in the 75F to 78F with the tropical range, goldfish do better in 68 to 70. Your goldfish would fair better in that tank the the Platy's would. I personally wouldnt do it, either go with Goldfish and whatever lives in that temp range or go with a Platy in a tropical tank.
