A woman at work told me she wanted her water tested because she didn't want to risk hurting her fish. They are koi. So after I got home I looked it up.

Koi fish can be worth millions — the most expensive koi fish ever sold was worth $1.8 million.
Koi are a type of carp, a common fish that can be found all over the world, but what makes Koi so special is their coloring and lineage.
There are regular competitions to name the top koi and just like prized dog breeds, Japanese people take koi breeding very seriously.

Maybe I should get some of these things as an investment. Has anyone ever had them?

High priced show animals must be shown. The prestigious shows are mostly located in Japan so you and your fish would have to fly back and forth. Winning shows increases the value of the fish.

Common Koi aren't worth much. They are fun pets if you don't mind all the work to keep them safe and healthy.

If you want show quality koi, you would have to study what about the body shape and markings makes them valuable, and you would have to start with expensive show koi for your breeding stock.

I've kept fancy goldfish, which I enjoyed, but could never justify the price for the show fish which could be thousands of dollars for a high quality specimen. I could recognize one when I saw it, but just couldn't justify the money for something that might die.

we have a local pet shop which sells Koi fish, they have an indoor pond, and these koi cost around $200 each.
One day they drained the pond as they found termites, you can see the wooden structure have many holes in them.
youc an also raise them outdoor, just dig and build a pond and it will come up for food and hide deep under to stay warm in winter
