Default renting and buying near Sedona

I am planning a move soon. I want to be in Sedona, but have found rentals there quite expensive compared to what I pay now. Eventually I want to buy a smallish piece of land in the country to build a cob house on. Does anyone have ideas for a more economical location?

I used to have a friend that lived in Prescott Valley, and I like that area well enough, but I would like to be located more to the north.

Or maybe you could point me in the right direction for looking for a rental. I've been checking craigslist.

How much rent do you want to pay and how large a place do you need/want? Would you consider living around Cornville, Cottonwood or Camp Verde? I think rents are reasonable *near* Sedona. Just in my neighborhood you can rent a really nice apt., with all the amenities, starting at $575 mo.. My brother rents a nice 3 BR house for around $850 mo.. You can always find places that rent for higher, of course, but I think our prices are pretty good.

For buying land to build there is probably plenty in Camp Verde and Cornville areas. And they are both in 'green belt' areas as well with Oak Creek and the Verde River.

I don't know where Cornville is, I'll have to look that one up, but the rent prices you mentioned are more like what I'm used to. Right now I live in a 2 bedroom, but would certainly consider a 1 bedroom or even a studio if they'd rent to an adult and a toddler.

Do you know of a better place than craigslist to find rentals?

Cornville is between Sedona and Cottonwood but I was mostly thinking of Cornville as a place to build. Our local newspapers have quite a few ads for rentals of all types. Also most real estate companies know of rentals, or manage them. You might check out "real estate Cottonwood, AZ" on Google. We have quite a few apartment complexes here as well and they advertise in the newspapers.

I see your location is Idaho? Do you want to have a place rented before you come down or can you take a week or so to find a place? It might be best to do the latter. And you'll have no problem finding a rental for an adult and a toddler.

I haven't checked out rentals on Craigslist in a really long time so have no idea what's there anymore.

At first I thought I'd find something before I came, but I've changed my mind. I think it would be better for us to put all of our stuff in storage and drive down with the few things we really need.

That's probably the best bet. You COULD do the move and put your things in storage here. That way you wouldn't have to make two trips. Especially if you're really sure you're going to stay here.

For rentals try looking at the classified section of the Red Rock News online. Many are there, even for the Cottonwood area.

You can also look in the Cottonwood paper, just Google for the name of it.

You do know that jobs are scarce here right? Just want to maks sure you're not hoping to come down and land a job out of the blue.

I believe UHaul has a deal where if you rent a truck from them then you get 1 month storage with them on the other end. If you prefer Penske etc. you can find cheap storage in Cottonwood. To me it would be easier not to have to go all the way back with a toddler.

Clarkdale, and Cottonwood are good places to rent from and are very convenient to Sedona. 25 minutes on a good road. The Verde Independent is a local paper with rentals. I'm sorry, I don't know the email address. I know a place in Clarkdale with a enclosed garage, 2 bedrooms and washer dryer installed that has openings. I lived there before I bought my house. Nice layout and nice people. PM me if you want details.

Thanks for the offer Mohawks, but I'm in a lease here through Oct. I won't be moving right away.
