Legally, you CAN be fired for sexual orientation in Arizona. While Flagstaff does have a gay pride event, I believe it's mostly Phoenix people going to get away from the hellish heat. It also hasn't been without incident:

Why yes, let's just trash a whole town for a single incident that occurred in 2008. BTW, two of those involved in that crime were from out of town, Englewood, CO and Sun City, AZ. It's utterly absurd to say in any shape or form that it's indicative of any anti-gay sentiment in Flagstaff.

I'm also not sure why you're trying to minimize the Flagstaff Pride event by saying it's mostly people from Phoenix. The festival is entirely hosted by a Flagstaff based organization. See here: About | Flagstaff Pride

What was that restaurant up there that put a homophobic message on its marquee? Crazy Bill's? You also left out the point that it is 100% legal to fire someone in Arizona for sexual orientation, which the OP questioned.

Did you look at their website? It specifically states: "This number (attendance) includes local citizens, tourists, and out of town guests."

It's also in mid-June, whereas Phoenix' is in mid-April. Funny... total shot in the dark here, but I'd assume Phoenix' is so early because of the heat during Pride season... and Flagstaff Pride is an excuse for some people to get away from the Phoenix heat.

Can you elaborate? Exactly what law does Arizona have or not have that makes it ok to fire a person based on their sexual preferences as compared to any other state?

If you want, you can look into ENDA for yourself for more information.

That link doesn't go to any specific laws. Just some vague reference in the notes about Arizona "prohibitting discrimination against public employees based on sexual orientation only."

That's because laws specifically prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity have to be enacted. Those laws only cover people in the public sector here... for now.

So just to be clear, Arizona does not have a law that says someone can discriminate based on sexual orientation. Arizona simply doesn't have a law that says you can't (along with about 2/3rds of the other states).
I'd be curious if there have been any cases where someone in Arizona was fired because of sexual orientation, filed a lawsuit and lost (or won).
