We've got em and we've got lots of 'em. Glad to hear you are a fan!
BS -- I've lived in Arizona for 64 years, including just about everywhere in the state, and I do considerable hiking and camping, and I have seen precisely two rattlesnakes (the last 25 years ago), about five black widows, numerous entirely peaceful coyotes, the occasional harmless centipede and precisely none of your other creatures. I love the authoritative "reports" on Arizona by people who moved here from New Jersey six months ago.

I don't live in Arizona yet but hope to move there soon. These forums have been so helpful to me. Also I have found when we visit we talk to people who live there. Some have lived in Arizona for 20 or more years. Some only a few months. After researching the Northern Arizona area and talking to locals It seems to me that there are scorpions, mosquitoes, rattle snakes, tarantulas etc. in Arizona. Just like the above poster stated you might only encounter them on a rare occasion, when on hikes, or when building in less populated areas out in the open. When I told family we are moving to Prescott Valley they all said the same thing Oh the heat, I would miss the green, what about the scorpions, tarantulas and rattle snakes. I always reply with what about the tics here that carry Lyme disease, the mosquitoes that swarm you at night and carry west nile virus, the june bugs that buzz around your window screens and fly in your face, or the brown recluse spiders etc. We live in the upper Midwest (near Chicago) and have had below freezing temps and over 30inches of snow. I won't see green for another 4 months and that is if I'm not swallowed up by one of our giant pot holes. To each his own. Do your research and visit and talk to the locals. Then you can make the best decision for you!

When I visit Sedona in 2011 I was surprise to see Javelinas in Arizona, I seen them in Texas a group of them and was told to stay away from them specially the male, so when I ran into a group of them around Airport Rd, Ijust froze until they clear the way. Here in Florida we have all types of snakes and other dangerous animal, but I have never seen any other than on TV. I did venture in Tlaquepaque and spoke to some of the shop owners about renting ashop or space, it is very expensive to rent a location in that area, and since I'm just starting I think I will look elsewhere to set up shop, what I would like to do is have a Mosaic shop and teach the Art of painting with glass (stain glass ), as well as sell my Art work.I will be visiting around May to see the area and possible store locations, I'm doing my homework now, so that when I retire I know the location I will be going to.

Is Cottonwood a good place to retire and set up my Mosaic shop, if you have any advice I'm all ears.

Thank You all for all the information.

I'm a 4th generation native and have lived here my entire life, just about exactly as long as you have.

And you both left out the bears. This is just my kind of place. In fact, a late March or early April trip is in the works to the Verde Valley, with the intention of possible relocation.

I had 3 close encounters and saw another one (all in Sedona) in a 2.5 year period and a friend who was with me for one of them had a close encounter with one up in a bush (now that frekas me out) during that same time. We are major hikers but one of them was in my backyard and the one I saw was on the street. That is not the norm and if you don't hike yo might never see one (but they are there ).

I live in San Diego and have seen rattlesnakes, scorpions, tarantulas, coyotes, and they live and let live; if you live and let live. I hear that Javelinas are a horse of a different color and may require the motivation of Smith and Wesson to respect your space. Seriously though, I am going to keep bear spray on my property and smaller holster versions for hiking with wifey, dog and me.
