Agreed with some of the most 'interesting' storms being toward Tucson. I hit one where I had to pull over and come to a complete stop on I-10 once. That was about 18 years ago.

The 'monsoon' as ColtAZ will tell you is a fickle thing.

Default Monsoon or Monsoons

This is from AZ Daily Sun, August 2nd:

"The monsoons have come quick and fast this summer. Luckily for Flagstaff residents, they happen to leave artwork in their wake in the form of sunrises, sunsets, and light shows. They also bring life to the plants and animals that share our beautiful town."

Just my guess here. There is familiar use, which does not quite match the academic use of the word. It's like when tourist guides write of rock formations when they mean rock monoliths or landmarks.

I had to do the same in '98 on the I'10 heading towards Tuscon. One of the worst thunder storms I've been in. I was in no hurry and didn't know about flash floods yet so I thought it was all good fun.
