Hello everyone.

We have a family vacation planned in July (11-17) to Fort Walton Beach. My kids have never been to the beach, and we have been looking forward to this for a year. Obviously, we are a little disappointed.

Is the oil already reaching this area of Florida? If not, do you expect it to?

I am trying to think of somewhere else to go to take my children - beach wise. Does anyone know of another area that would be a good place? We are from Oklahoma, and we have to drive... so south Florida is probably not a good choice.

The oil has only gotten as close as 8 miles off shore. I was talking to a fisherman buddy just yesterday. He said that it changed from our crystal clear water, to this brown gunk right at 8 miles.

That was yesterday, and now the weather is pushing it back off shore, so no, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

I haven't heard of any tar balls here either, but there might be a few by the time you get here. Don't worry, these things are few and far between, and you'll probably never notice them. I'd be more worried about jelly fish, than tar balls.

Destin and the beaches of South Walton are still very beautiful, and still very clean. Should remain that way for a while.

Now July, I'm not so sure, but for June, I think we are good.

And yes, I see the beach daily, I take my lunch breaks on the beach.

Cool Come on down!

I've been by the beach a lot lately, and it's looking great on Okaloosa Island and in Destin. I was here last year, and Okaloosa Island and Destin were barely touched. Remember, the news does focus on the bad stuff, that's kind of their job... I was in the water last summer and fall and never would have guessed that an oil spill had happened. The weather is just warming up here, so I haven't been in the water yet this year, but seriously, I wouldn't worry too much. I definitely on being in there asap!!
