Default For the natives and/ot long-time residents...misperceptions about Florida that crack me up

1-Alligators are everywhere..."should I be afraid of alligators when I'm walking down the street at night?"

2-"How do you put up with all the hurricanes?"....like there is a major hurricane that hits one's neighborhood on a weekly basis....lol....

3-The heat..."will I pass out in July if I step outside at noon?" On second though, maybe this is a valid concern....haha...

What else do you hear or read about on these boards that makes you chuckle and shake your head?

Bugs - I experienced worse problems with bugs in New England than Florida
Snakes - Again, no more snakes than New England
Sharks - If they were everywhere then they wouldn't be such big news
Pedophiles - They're just plain everywhere not just in FL
Mickey Mouse - Florida is not Disney. We have real people down here with real lives and real issues.

True, though New England only has two poisonous species, vs. six in Florida.

Being from Orlando, I've been asked "So do you go to Disney every weekend?" more times than I can count.

On the boards I've seen a lot of people concerned about flooding. The only time I've seen anything near a "flood" was when the streets filled up to the curb during a hurricane. Sure, they do happen, but they can happen anywhere. Heck, there's been awful flooding up in New Jersey and Tennessee over past year.

Tennessee for example, has hills and valley's and is more prone to flooding.. Florida is flat and doesn't have as many low lying areas.

I've got one, I've got one!!!

Florida has a very low cost of living... Big misconception. Unless you are from NY, NJ, or CA...

Hurricanes - we Floridians do seem to be dodging them every summer

Old People - without investigating, I'm sure we have more people over 65 yrs old than any other state

Alligators - they do show up on your doorstep.

Yes, my friends in MA expect me to show up brown as a berry but truth be told, I avoid the Florida sun and usually don't get any color until I'm up north and able to walk around and enjoy the outdoors.
