Just wondering as a longtime service industry employee I've noticed that average tips hear in Destin are around 5%. Pretty big slap in the face for all of us struggling to make a living. I just don't understand why down here vs the midwest and southwest where tips average 15% they are so terrible at tipping. I think it has a lot to do with how the people in this area are trying as hard as they can to maintain an illusion of wealth, when they are really not. As a long time bartender i can tell you I ALWAYS tip 20% unless the service was awful and even then I'll tip a MINIMUM of 10%. Are southerners just jerks?

No. You must just work at a restaurant frequented by jerks.

I have heard the most complaints about poor tippers coming from the penny-pinching people from the Midwest or Canada.

I've been in a profession involving tips and I've kept track of where they come from and who I received my best tips from over the years, and when it comes to women tipping? I won't comment.

Maybe you're spending too much time whining & texting? If you're unhappy with your income....go home.

Only 5%? Maybe they're trying to tell you something.

Destin is in the heart of the Redneck Riviera(Florida panhandle). That's means 90% of your vacationers/tippers are poor people from the southern states(Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, etc.).

Poor people?

hardly...

guests are now behaving as if entitled to treat locals like indentured servants, not worthy of common courtesy, or tips.

The last few times I've been down to Tampa and we've went to restaurants we've been met with poor servers with bad attitutdes, One even went so far as to say that she hated her job and wished all the customers would just leave...

That's usually what leads to really bad tips..

Then again, with the economy being bad and people not having as much money as they used to and prices on food going up, Maybe people just don't have the extra to tip, to be honest, they can't really eat at a place and choose to avoid having a waiter/waitress..
