Ulee's Gold (film)
Has anyone else here seen this movie (with Peter Fonda)? It was filmed in the Panhandle and has some nice Florida scenery (forests and mangrove) -- also it's just a really good movie.

It is funny you mention that. The property I am buying, I have made up my mind, in Liberty county is right near there. I love it there but it will for the most part not be a full time residence. We will be in ,for a while anyway, in full time retirement and will probably do some traveling with that as our base.
I love it's proximity to the rest of the country. I feel like I live on an island in South Florida.
This is where the movie was made. They are real nice people.

I lived near there too.
I was in Gulf county, and there is plenty of Tupelo honey made there. The Lanier family, from Wewathictchka, Gulf County, 20 minutes away from Port St Joe, our old town, were the bee consultants for the film, and their bee yards served as film locations. It was their honey we brought with us when we moved east to Amelia Island.
I always liked the movie long before we ever dreamed of moving to north Florida--it is a good story and well-acted film. And yes, the scenery is simultaneously haunting and beautiful.

macguy,
it's interesting that you haven't thrown the baby out with the bathwater like some others on here--you just don't like So. Fla, I take it...

If I move down to Fla. that's definitely somewhere I'd like to visit for a weekend trip. Part of the fascination of Fla. for me is that various parts of the state have such completely different cultures and scenery.

It's got some nice aspects but I have lived here most all my life. The beach is nothing compared to trees fields and areas you can hike. The beach is kind of one dimensional. It is probably fun for somebody new but it wares off pretty fast. I used to do boating but that is old now as well. On a weekend it can be like driving rush hour on I-95 just to get out the inlet, and the intra-coastal, forget about it. I wasn't kidding about feeling like you are on an island down here.
I have driven pretty much everywhere there is to go down here one time or another. All you can do is drive up the coast and after a while you know every billboard. To be honest, anywhere will get old after a while. That is why I want to be in north Florida so I can be within a days drive from so many different things.

well, I like to dive, so I would say it's 2 or 3-dimensional, but I see what you mean
