We own two Bahamian Potcakes, http://tinyurl.com/yse6hq these dogs are well adapted to living in the tropics and are extremely loyal and protective of their homes and yards. We adopted them to bark at intruders and they did a great job for us.
They make fantastic companions and are very street smart and loving. We have had them for seven years now and moved them to Canada five years ago where they adjusted very well to the cold winter weather.
You should consider adopting one or two as these loving beautiful dogs really need good homes.

Catahoula Leopard dog
Hi,
we have an awesome dog called a Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Hound. We adopted him from a Florida dog shelter. There are a bunch of catahoulas in Florida from what I remember. Males are approx. 65 pounds. They look like a mix of labrador and greyhound, but from what I've read they are actually an old mix of greyhound, mastiff, and red wolf. They are beautiful marble colored and our dog is the best dog I've ever had...very obedient, very loving, and very good at guarding our house. He scares the daylights out of any service men who come around, and is a great dog to have with me if I want to walk alone on wooded paths or late at night. Catahoulas are not good with children. They are anxious and have to be 'working' a lot. They love to be told what to do. They also have webbed feet and LOVE to swim. They are very playful and I swear they have a sense of humor. Our eight year old still acts like a puppy sometimes. He cracks us up. I would not put this kind of dog outside to stay. They need human interaction as they are pack dogs and crave attention. They would not do well at all outside by themselves. They are Louisiana's state dog and have been groomed to hunt ducks in swampland. Anyway, if you google catahoula leopard hounds I'm sure you'll receive a bunch of helpful information. Good luck!

Summers... That is incredible! I have one of those dogs too. He is absolutely the best and just like you described - almost. Mine doesn't have webbed paws and he doesn't like water too much. I think he's got a few more mixes in him.
Mine weighs exactly 66 lbs and will be 4 y.o. in July. We too adopted him from a "adoption fair" we went to in Ft. Lauderdale. I was actually looking for a dachshund and ended up with this wonderful 8 week catahoula mix puppy.
He's great with the family and those he gets to know, even children. Any strangers, however, ....not even across the street. He's great with all the cats at home and they even sleep together. One cat in particular loves to play with him and they run around the yard together.

I agree, I hate the term too, I'm only using the term that my agent used. The list he had was amazing it also included the little tiny Chihuahua

I met a Catahoula Leopard Hound--in Colorado, of all places.
His owner was actually from the South. He really was a cool-looking dog.
The only problem she said she had (and she did not consider it a severe problem, because she was a good owner who trained her dog) was that sometimes her dog would get a scent and he would *really* want to follow it.
He was a very striking animal--friendly, too.
I still do not understand why people call pit bulls "bulldogs" here. They are two distinct (fairly different!) breeds. Even the newspaper calls them bulldogs.

Mine too...and I corrected him. It's 'breed discrimination' I told him and it is wrong! Humph !
All we can do is let people know the list is growing and one day their own little cutie could be on it.
You know, this is not the first time I've heard Chihuahuas mentioned...so he showed you the actual list, huh? Well that was cool of him.
Okay, cross Chihuahua off your Guard Dog list........ !

Not a good idea unless you have made the proper living arrangements for them...PLENTY of buckets of water and SHADE..plus flea, ticks, and misquitos are a big problem...

You HAVE got to be kidding. What's the risk? Tripping over them? The insurance creeps have sunk to a new low. What's next: Goldfish?

I dont understand why they call "pit bulls" bulldogs either! lol.. The only thing I can really think of is that the three breeds that people call "pit bulls" (american pit bull terriers, american staffordshire terriers and staffordshire bull terriers) along with a few other breeds are considered bulldog breeds... also there are a few different types of bulldogs. There are atleast 14 breeds that are considered bulldog breeds...
These are all considered bulldog breeds...
1. english bulldog

2. olde english bulldoggee

3. valley bulldog

4. french bulldog

5. american bulldog

6. american pit bull terrier.. the breed that our 2 puppys are (also considered a "pit bull")

7. american staffordshire terrier (also considered a "pit bull")

8. staffordshire bull terrier (also considered a "pit bull")

9. banter bulldogge

10. boxer

11. alapaha blue blood bulldog

12. boston terrier

13. bull terrier

14. bull mastiff
I got all of this info and all of these pictures from.. http://www.bulldogbreeds.com/
