Guard Dogs breeds in Florida
Hello. I would like some advice from people who live in Northeast Florida. What types of guard dogs go well with the climate in this part of the state? Obviously a long-hair breed would not due well. I saw a cool looking dog called an Argentino Dogo that I thought might do ok since it was originally bred in Argentina? Any thought would be appreciated.

guard dogs
Most people here in central Florida as well as up north use German Shepards, Rottweilers, etc. Knowing how to treat your dog is more important: the right food, plenty of water, a comfortable place to lie down, and enough shade to rest...........

I feel the same way Sami, I was just wondering if certain dogs that are specifically bred for warmer weather would do better.

Maybe somebody else can be more specific...........but the only dogs I know of that might have it easier are hairless dogs.......and I don't know any hairless breeds that are guard dogs. I'd stick to shorter haired breeds if I could and leave it at that. LOL

I used to work for a guard dog company years ago and a German shepherd is best. They deal fine with the heat and most of all they deal great with bad weather. They have a double coat of hair and can be depended on even in a heavy rainstorm like we have in Florida from one minute to the next.
Dobermans are not that good in a bad weather situation. I have seen them refuse to even go out in the rain while a German shepherd will jump into a river to save you. They can't be beat as an all around guard dog in Florida. They are pretty much all you will see as police dogs.

We are owners of a Dogo Argentino, and live in Jacksonville. He came straight from Argentina. We keep him inside most of the time and, since we are potty training him, try to do most of the exercise early in the morning and late evening. He loves being inside!

They may be the worst guard dogs you could get. While you are being robbed they would go off chasing a squirrel. Pit bulls can't even be taught to stay out of the road, they will walk right into traffic and get hit. A trainer will tell you that both those breads are smart. They can be taught tricks pretty quick but can't be depended on to do what you want when you want them to. A guard dog has to be dependable.

Hello All -
Is FL, in general, that crime-ridden that so many have guard dogs, or mainly specific larger cities? Is it mainly folks with kids, so the dog is more of a family companion, or are you protecting yourself inside your homes?
Just curious... Baltic_Celt
