cil, you are right... many of the ppl moving out of so fla and orlando areas are moving out to try and find a slower pace, less traffic, cheaper housing, colder winters, etc... many of them should give n fla a try. it's a different state almost compared to central and so fla.

I would like to move to TN. It isn't because of the home prices, insurance, and taxes though. We, fortunately, are doing great financially here. I am not too positive that we will have the same luck when we move though, jobs in my Hubby's field are scarce there. We live below our means and bought a home that we knew we would be able to afford if #@#$%& hit the fan. Most of the people I know purchased homes they couldn't afford with an interest only loan for 100% of the purchase price, they are now in serious binds and want to move out of state. Most of them want to go to NC, SC, or GA though. So, our reason for moving out is because we just need a change - some freezing cold weather and snow!

Default colder weather

in nc/sc/ga, it definitely gets cold, but not much snow... you'll probably have to travel further north. in western nc, where i used to live, it rarely snowed. not quite sure about sc/ga, but i would bet that western nc would get the most snow of those places. usually its just a little flury

Wow. Incredible thread.
I grew up in Orlando. Lived in Tampa for about 1.5 years (loved it except for the traffic). Moved to Metro Atlanta in 1985 then back to FL in 2004 - Daytona Beach - oceanfront condo - can you say MANDATORY EVACUATION? All 3 hurricanes. Roof gone, air conditioners gone, elevator didn't work for months. Most of the people I encountered were either 900 years old or snowbirds or tourists. No jobs. So on to Metro Jacksonville for about 1.5 years. I thought I was back in Georgia...and the traffic was horrible. Now in Palm Coast since Oct. The only industry here is Real Estate. This place is dead. Dried up.

I always said I would never leave my state again (unless I was moving to the Islands). I don't know where to go now. I absolutely, positively cannot handle cold weather. I hate it.

I hear 95% of you complaining about Taxes, Insurance and Mortgages. Just think if you were SINGLE (like me) and had to come up with that kind of money!

The main reason I joined this site is too scout for a new place to move to. I hate moving too. I want to get somewhere and stay permanently. I'll keep looking...

I was born and raised in South Florida. We are in our 30's and just starting a family. We are relocating to South Carolina, but plan to keep a small condo here to visit. Honestly, we are leaving because we are ready for a change. There are so many things about this place that I LOVE, but the area we live in caters to the retirees and Northeasterners (South Palm Beach). BUT, I would not want to live in any other part of Florida (why bother right?). Honestly, I'd rather go farther south than north, but we can't afford that right now. Plus, it is a bit of a "playground" down here. So, we are going to raise the kids in S.C., keep a condo here for vacations and maybe come back after the kids are grown.

I have been surprised at how many have moved to Oregon, almost every week or so, I will run into someone on the train or whereever start up a chat, and they tell me they moved to Portland from fla. Everyone of them said, you need a car in florida, all the transit here in Portland is a real treat for them. All of them seem to be in their 20's and 30's. Most of them said, they just got tired of fla and wanted to try a new place.

Will they start to return if the property tax and HOI are under control?

What will be the key factor for folks to return? Talk about one only:

Housing Cost:

Crime:

Jobs:

HOI:

Weather:

Cost of Living:

Education:

Friendly community:

Diversified community:

I think the cost of housing has created a negative wall for state residents and families looking to relocate. If the market gets back to the pre 2004 hurricane season prices, many will return and all the other topics will be better positioned to support everyone.

See new poll about topics....

I think most of the residents could see the big picture. Irrational demand drove up the median price almost 90 percent in about 18 months. Sorry to burst your cream puff, but those inflated prices were being supported by frenzy buying, not fundamental investing. In other words, those values were not real, so as they say, what goes up must come down.”

“You only have to drive two blocks to lose count of the number of ‘For Sale’ signs you saw. Our inventory has increased more than 600 percent since the peak of the market. We are approaching 25,000 resale condos and homes.”

“Unfortunately, too many sellers are acting irrationally because they are either needy or greedy. The needy need a certain price because of what they owe. The greedy want a certain price because of what they feel they are owed.”

“The media can run all the positive articles they want, but that will not change the fact that we have more homes for sale than we could sell in two years, assuming that no new listings were taken.”

Its sad what greed will do

Don't worry, even if they convince people that the problems are "fixed" mother nature will really FIX Florida! Some of you think I hate the whole state and want to see it flattened, it's not true. I just want people to stop comming, we're full already! Let those of us stay where we were born. And if people weren't so stupid they would be building to survive anything nature can throw at you. I don't feel sorry for those who act irrationally.
