Silly tax question
I must be an idiot, but some things you just don't pay attention to.
I just saw that Florida has no income tax, but there is a state sales tax (which sounds reasonable).
What EXACTLY am I not paying in FL that I pay in VA?
My current paycheck has:
Federal withholding tax
Social security
VA state tax
It sounds as if the state gets extra taxes for it's tourism (hotel tax etc) that reduces the actual taxes the residents pay.
This may be a really dumb question - but I honestly don't pay attention because Virginia has really high taxes (specifically where I lived in Fairfax County before).

Thank you for clarifying! I'm sure you get hit in other areas, but it means a few extra $$ in your paycheck.

Like FL, TX has no state income tax on residents; however, since government programs still require funding, the lack of a state income tax usually means higher user and service fees on things like automobile registration and tags. Maybe even higher sales tax rates. Also higher taxes on business and professionals that get passed on to consumers. Always consider all possible taxes and fees when comparing the tax burdon of residents in different states.

Our yearly registration on our vehicles (1 sedan and 1 van) totals $75 per year in St. Lucie County. Really not that bad. When relocating, I think new registration and tags are around 150.00, but that's a one time fee.
As for sales tax, it's pretty low here, ranging from 6-7% among 3 different counties. It's really not that expensive here...

You people left of the property tax. There is no way to buy a home for under 200K then at the present law it's taxed at 3% of your sales press less the 25k deduction for homestead. If you don't homestead thenyou are taxed at the full assert value which is pretty steep. Best advise, rent and look around different counties

Where do you live that you pay 3% of the sales price on property tax? I haven't heard of any this high in Florida? Also, property tax is not based on sales price, but assessed at value.

What? Taxes in Florida are from as low as .012 to .025 with the average around .019. You can go one mile and it can change by 10 mills.

How would anyone who doesn't have experience in VA know what y'all have to pay there?
