Holly,
If you are looking at Jax, homes can be bought in this range.
The $200k end will usually need a lot of work, but if you can swing $250k, you can even buy a newer (3, 4, 5 year old) home not far from the beach. It would likely be modest in size (maybe 1400-1600 sq ft), but in a good, decent neighborhood (not fancy...no community swimming pool or anything like that ).
Check out the Jacksonville forum if you haven't already - it's pretty active.

If you still want to move to Florida "no later than September", research some areas far inland and in the Panhandle. I wish you good luck in your search.[/quote]
I'm in the panhandle and I need to say this: sure the cost of living is lower and taxes are lower compare to the rest of the state. The job market is low and thin. I suggest you look online for newspapers and read the classified section on jobs and housing before you move into an area. The newspaper in print is about 15-20 pages with coupons! Some parts in the panhandle like inland is very quiet, need a car to get around and of course lots of low income housing like trailers are plentiful. The school system inland really stinks and your child will get set behind, mine did! I can not wait to leave this area. It's miles and miles of driving pasting cows pastures to get nowhere but to the food store for a loaf of bread. The small towns, if you blink and eye, you will miss it! City Hall is the size of my main bathroom!
I'm in the same boat, looking to relocate to another area in Florida as a single woman. I wonder if I should go back to my home state - New York City?

Check out Sebring in Highlands Co. I have no idea what the demand there would be for your profession, but it is growing so my thoughts would be there would be a spot for you. They do have several apartments in your price range~not huge or luxurious of course, but that wasn't something you asked for. Also, they may have employment in the line of something your husband could do. They're often looking for pool cleaners, garage door installers, lawn care workers, etc. If you would like specific info, PM me. And I'm not a realtor so I'm just wanting to pass along what I know about the area.

I am also in the same boat. And am really planning to relocate with my 3 chipmunks to Palm Bay, Fl., early next year. And yes, am planning to buy a home. Not looking for a glam home, but humble with enough backyard space to have my kids run around. Heidi, Holly and family you are welcomed to park your bags if you are willing to share space without driving each other bunkers till I am ready to move. How does that sound? That is, if the GOD above decides that is ok for me to relocate to Florida......... ...
GOD BLESS U ALL

Dear bklynbabe'
I am not sure where Palm Bay is? Where is it in relation to Tampa? and where is it you are relocating from? How will you know if God decides it is ok for you to move?
That was sweet of you to offer to park our bags. Really is nice to offer that to two families you don't know, what is your address, ha haha. Not sure if you meant where you are at now or when we all get Florida.

I am sorry, I am just a little confused, My family is enough to drive anyone bonkers, love my kids but we also have dogs two. How old are your kids? I actually think it would be fun and feel a little less overwhelming if we knew people going to the area. Especially for the kids.
This thread is confusing. I do NOT want to continue to pay $200,000 for a home. Not worth it to me cuz my husband and I work too much and miss the time with our kids. The youngest are almost 9 (twins) and I really am frustrated that I feel like I am missing out on so much. Of course, I am NOT complaining about working in general, I actually like working, just the 60 hour per week thing to provide food and shelter for a family is not working for me. Maybe my age has changed my priorities. My kids are growing up and yea, I have a house (3 bedromm, nice house, but pretty basic ranch style), an acre of land and my kids seem happy but I feel like I've just missed so much. I would much rather work 40 hours, in whatever field that works best for me, be it a restuarant, a law office, or a business office. and live in a place that will accept my dog and kids, preferrable rent a house and just enjoy live a lot more. Simplify. If I stayed here I could probably sell the house, rent a crappy apartment and spend more time with my kids that way but then there is the winter thing which I DO HATE WINTER.
So all the information from people is great, the good and the bad I much rather know more going into Florida than have it sugercoated and then hit with a brick of reality when i get there.
I also realize that perspective is everything.
Thanks

Sorry Holly, I misunderstood what you were saying (this thread IS confusing ).
Yeah, Jacksonville may not be your best bet then. Houses can be had for less than $200k, but if you don't have a bankroll for repairs/upgrades for an older house, it can be a nightmare (and anything under $200k here is likely to need something).
Renting in Jax is expensive. There are always options out in the rural areas, but these areas come with their own set of complications.
A few years back, it might have made sense for you to relocate to Jax, but the market is very different now and it sounds like it could be too much of a stretch financially for what you're looking for.
Best of luck to you, I'm sure it will all work out .
