I'm glad you started this thread...I have learned something trying to figure out the answer to your question.
Check out this link.
http://www.sheriff-okaloosa.org/Pres...7/cc062007.htm
"To be legal, the firearm must be “securely encased” or “not available for immediate use.” “Securely encased” means in a closed zipper or Velcro pouch, in a snapped holster, or in some other closed compartment. In the glovebox or center console is “securely encased” and therefore legal, as long as the compartment is closed. If you open the closed compartment to retrieve your license or for any other reason, you might now have an illegal concealed firearm. Another way a gun in the car can be legal is to be “not available for immediate use.” For example, a shotgun in a rack in the rear window of a pickup truck would be very difficult for the driver or passenger to quickly use.
One bit of advice for motorists with firearms: If you’re in your car and have a gun in you pocket or purse or in your waistband or in an ankle holster, you would need a Concealed Weapons License. "
This is a Sheriffs department website and they are saying if the gun is put away in a glove box or center console then your good.

but then it states:
"If you open the closed compartment to retrieve your license or for any other reason, you might now have an illegal concealed firearm."
what do you do if you get pulled over, and need your insurance and proof of registration, and the glove box is now open? obviously one would want to tell the officer, but now are you in trouble once glove box is opened? what is that all about?

It is not necessary to have a license or permit to carry a loaded firearm in a private vehicle, so long as the gun is "securely encased". Florida law defines a weapon as being securely encased if the firearm is in a glove compartment, whether or not locked, in a snapped holster (not worn on your body!), in a zippered gun case or in a box or other container that requires a lid or cover to be lifted or opened in order to gain access to the firearm. These restrictions do not apply to any person who holds a valid Florida Concealed Weapon License or a reciprocal state license/permit.

It's not much good if you can't get to it. That is how you can legally transport the gun but it doesn't help if you have some plan for it to be for self defense.

Without a permit, the gun must be kept in glove compartment in a holster .

Just to keep things from being un-necessarily dramatic, when you are stopped, calmly tell them you have a small arm and where it is located. If you have a CCW it is the time to tell them. If you surprise an LEO it will not be good for either of you. Same applies really for any weapon. As long as you're not engaged in something illegal they don't mind you being legally armed but they will hate to find it by surprise because you look like you have something to hide and they just saw their life flash before their eyes as they called for backup. read the FS and follow it and you'll be fine.

What do you mean "who knows"? What kind of statement is that?

Well it would make sense to keep the gun in a compartment that you will not have to access for anything else.
I have a center console that I don't use for anything...it would be an easy thing to keep a hand gun in there...AND only take it out if I were threatened.

mrtudo, "who knows" means exactly how it sounds. "who knows" what the 3 step rules are?
