I'm going to be traveling to Key West with my wife and two kids (11 and 13) in April 2011, and am looking for a place to stay for a week or so. I've scoured TripAdvisor, and most hotels/b&bs/inns I've looked at are pretty much equal to eachother.
We would like the hotel to be no more than 2 blocks away from the beach and have a good pool and neat rooms. We are willing to spend up to $500 a night.
Got any places in mind?

I like Pier House. But I prefer to stay in Marathon or Hawks Cay.

I've checked that hotel and it looks great! Room rates are reasonable, plus it has a private beach.
Thanks for your help!

I wouldn't focus too much on the beach if I were you. Beaches in KW aren't world class... they're man made and the sand is actually imported.

If you want a nice beach in KW go to Ft. Zach for the day. You can also explore the fort there as well as relax on the beach. If you want to make a day of the beach, rent a car and head to Bahia Honda State Park. It's MM 20 something. It's been rated one of the top beaches in the continental US before.

Since you're traveling with young ones, you might want to stay on the southern part of the island (upper Duval) since it's quieter and more family friendly, especially at night. Check out the Southernmost Hotel collection for some lodging options. You might also consider Casa Marina or the Reach Resort.

If you want to stay towards the busy ends of Duval, lower Duval, check out the Pier House, Ocean Key, the Westin, the Banyan Resort or the Hyatt.

Some inns are kid friendly, but keep in mind the pools are inns aren't as big and the rooms are different. Not saying that those are bad things, I always stay at an inn in Key West because IMO that's how you get the true flavor of the island, it's just most inns like I said, aren't as kid friendly.

Enjoy your trip!

@Coconut 1- Which Hyatt are you referring to? There are 5 Hyatts in Key West. Also, by the Westin, did you mean the cottages on Sunset Key or the Westin Key West Resort?
Anyways, thanks for the help! Ocean Key seems like a great place to stay, as well as the Southernmosts.

Sorry, the one at 601 Front, the resort and spa.

Sunset Key would no doubt be lovely, but will be more than $500 a night, I'm sure. I meant the resort

How is the Doubletree hotel down there? My wife and I are looking for something quieter and were told that this hotel might work for us. From the customer reviews I've read it's been pretty impressive. Looking to go during the week of Thanksgiving. We're not into drinking/partying but like to eat and enjoy the natural surroundings. Any other suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

I would consider The Reach for family friendliness, quiet and overall experience. It's a Waldorf-Astoria property and evidently so. The oceanviews are wonderful. They have their own private beach which happens to be not man-made. Despite feeling off the beaten path you can still walk to restaurants/shops and not have to drive, which is a great perk while vacationing.
