Smile Spring Hill-Real answers please

My husband, children and I are relocating to Florida. I've been asking many questions and reading threads for hours.

He may be able to transfer within his current job and if he does that one of our choices in terms of where his job will be located is Springhill.

I've read some threads on Springhill but would like some real answers as to what it is really like.

The threads were a little unclear. I need information on jobs (in general) for myself as well as schools, and if there are activities for kids such as boyscouts, girlscouts that sort of thing. My daughter actually wants to take karate which is not available where I live now.

And of course, any neighborhood information would be good. Some of what I have already read was unclear. Which neighborhoods we should look at and which ones to avoid.

Any information would be great, even if Springhill turns out not to be what I think it seems to be from here, it would be good to know that now.

If the breadwinner has a job, that's part of the solution. Many new stores going up as well as eateries, Wal-Marts, doctors and hospitals where jobs are. I applied for one job and immediately got it.

Air is clean, houses aren't on top of each other, measured growth is going on. I believe the Boy Scouts have property right on Cortez. Gas prices about 12 cents less a gal than we have. Prices are less on ET including doctor, dentist visits....auto ins. is even cheaper there. English is the language of the area. I'd say it's a great place for young families to grow with the area yet cozy for boomers and mid-aged. Not for cosmopolitan types unless they like uncluttered by day, Tampa for night life. I like the residential yet woodsy feel about it. Uncluttered compared to S. FL.

Down points that I can see. It could use a little more to do but from what I see, that's happening. Taxes and insurance seem to be higher but it's like that ALL over FL and many states anyway. I love that the air is clean and the area uncluttered.

Default I was offered...

employment at newspaper distrib. plant on Cortez and at Wally World. I was offerred something through a local dress shop and chain drug store. I also enrolled through the County and got daily online updates for their positions. You go through their website and opt into the daily update line and they contact you. A buddy applied at pancake house and was hired immed. She made great tips and left Wally W. for them. There are jobs, it's a matter of what type of employment you are seeking. I stopped looking after that.

I'm not sure about neighborhoods that were good and bad. Ours was/is nice and is so close to everything (by car) that's all I know. Again, it's what you are use to and looking for.

Default Here we go again

Spring Hill was developed in the late 60's as a retirement community, homes were small and the prices were 9,000 to 16,000, many of those homes are on the main drag coming into Spring Hill, mostly rentals, many are unkept, shabby
and do not add to the area.

There are several nice communities that are well kept and nice, 7-Hills off of Mariner Blvd. near the YMCA is nice, Pristine Place off of Spring Hill Drive nice
Woodland Waters nice, Sterling Hills, nice, but with new developements come taxes and high home owners insurance. The HOI for the area is high, due to the fact that Pasco/Hernando counties are the sinkhole capital of Fl. Make sure you can sercure HOI before buying a home.

There are several good schools, Challenger is fairly new, good school
Chocattati, California St. another good school, Suncoast Elem. good school.

There are girl scouts/boy scouts..........there are several Karate schools in the area, should be no problem. We also have many new stores opening
Old Navy, Marshalls, PetSmart, Michaels, Carrabba's, we have two movie theaters, two bowling alleys.

Spring Hill also has its share of problems, no one likes to talk about the drug problems in SH, but they are here. Was over to the courthouse yesterday
for a visit, if one were to visit the courthouse and sit in on the cases you would be amazed what is going on in this county. Others would poo poo what I say, but I stand by what I say.

Good luck on your search

Default Drugs...

Unfort., are everywhere, USA. Gore's son just got popped and he's priviledged so there are excuses to go with every alcohol and drug abuse story. Too poor, too rich, too this, too that. But not the whole town is using.

Yea, of course, drugs are everywhere, I understand that. And I know it happens in good neighborhoods as well as bad.

I was looking for information regarding more obvious bad neighborhoods. Like areas where people hang out and drink half the night, fights, that kind of thing.

As far as employment goes, I work in a law office right now. But I call it a dungeon. I've also waitressed and have done good at that in the past.

If I was to look for employment as a waitress, would it be easy enough to find a job? and would it matter to what time of year it was, for example if I come down in November would it be harder to locate work as a waitress??

Thanks to all

P.S. And I have find out about the girl scouts and kids activities and it seems to me that there is a lot of things for kids to be a part of.

My husband lived in Springhill for 27 years growing up there since 6 years of age and his parents and older brother still live there. It's a growing town with 4 walmarts within a 10 mile radius. Many of our friends still live out there. There are a lot of restaurants for waitress jobs and they all seem very busy all year long. Plenty of shopping centers and even more being built. Our friends have their daughter stay at the YMCA for afterschool care and during the summer but there's plenty for her to do there. There is also a water park just outside of town called Weeki Wachee Springs which the kids would enjoy. I don't think there are very bad areas in Springhill. those areas tend to be more in the Brooksville area.

Thanks for your reply

I have been trying to find out as much as I can and Springhill seems like a nice place.

I know there is good and bad everywhere, been in both areas myself. And I have read alot about people who love Florida and others who don't.

It is very expensive in New England to live. Florida may turn out to be the same as far as living expense but it doesn't seem so. You can't touch renting a home around here for under 1200.

Anyway's I figure if the cost of living between the two are similiar that would be fine.

The winters are a killer in New Hampshire. I don't mind the snow (except driving in it) as much as I hate the cold and the dark. From about Oct to April it just gets darker and darker and colder and colder. Some people love the winter. I dont'. I get depressed, and bored and fat. The nice weather is just so short, 3 months or so. The winters seem to last forever and for the past two years, we've had no spring. Of course, more reasons than that for moving but it is the biggest one.

Your reply was really helpful, thanks
