Default Port Orange area

I did a search and saw a few threads with so so information. I am trying to get an idea of what Port Orange is like? I have been to New Smyrna a few times when I lived out in Winter Park back in the early to mid 1990's. I did drive through on my way up to see Daytona back then, but do not remember it.

I have a job interview for a property out there in Port Orange, and wanted to know if there are and bad areas, and anyone with info on elementary and middle schools? What is it like there? I looked up the crime index and it look decently low.

If it gets me out of SWFL, and of course the job will be a step up for me in a larger, nation wide company, I will be a lot happier in FL.

Thanks

Port Orange is a nice middle class (mostly) suburb of Daytona Beach which in the past several years seems to have morphed into a more self sufficient city. It now has more of an economic base in terms of employers and businesses. I don't know of any bad areas. The Spruce Creek High School district is excellent and would try to focus there first. Cypress Creek Elementary and Creekside Middle feed Spruce Creek High School. The boundary if I'm not mistaken for the zoning is residents living west of I-95.

I have lived here for 14 years (all my other years in Daytona so I am very familiar with it) and I agree with the PP. Spruce Creek Elementary and Sweetwater Elementary also feed into Creekside Middle School, which feeds into Spruce Creek High. Many of the kids at Silver Sands Middle also attend SCHS. Keep in mind though with schools that ratings are based on test scores and the vast majority of Port Orange is a middle class community, so the schools are indeed going to rank on the higher side for that reason.

Port Orange is located only about 10 minutes from New Smyrna and 10 to 15 minutes from Daytona Beach. You will also be within 10-20 minutes of the beach, depending upon how far to the west you live.

Good luck!

Nancy

Sounds like a positive thing if I get the job there. 1 interview down, 2 to go!!!

I was hoping to hear positives about the schools. My little one is in 5th grade. I just want to make sure she will go to a good place if dad does.

Interview #2 down and went excellent. Now they want me to drive up to meet the manager and see the property. This will be a HUGE step up for me, more $$$, bigger better company, and I will be a lot happier in NE Florida...

It's getting closer!!!!!!

Chris, good luck with your new job-prospect!

I suggest that you take a look at the Ormond Beach area (just north of Daytona); if you don't mind a [relatively] short commute, that area may be more appealing than Port Orange. I lived in Daytona for 6+ years, and although I found Port Orange quaint, it abutted many "iffy" neighborhoods. I agree that Spruce Creek is heavenly, but you'd have to make sure your Port Orange home falls into that district (insofar as schools as concerned).

I'd definitely recommend checking out Ormond Beach before committing to anything in Port Orange...

Best,
LT

Hey LT,

Yeah, I know how Daytona can be. I went there once... To the beach, I have heard living there is not good. The thing is, I will be working and living at the same apartment community(rent free). The property is on Dunlawton Avenue in PO. I have been through PO, but never really saw much. Ormond Beach is awesome I know. The manager called me today and we talked about the area, she said it is in a really nice area, no worries.

I lived in Fort Myers, nothing can be worse, well, it can, but I am sure the property/job will be great.

3rd interview went great with the property manager. One more interview with another HR higher up, go see the property and I am in... Myself and my family are excited!
