Is $8 an hour the most you can earn in Florida? (Miami: low income, apartments)

Hi everybody,
WOW.....I wanted to relocate to Fl (Central), but reading all of this is VERY discouraging. I am from Québec and have been a nurse for 16 years. I have everything (almost) to be aloud to work in the States, so my question is: Would you guys think that, as a nurse, I could relocate to Fl and be able to live decently with my 2 daughters (considering the low cost of the houses!) Please, I would love some good advices because I'm really tired of the winter and the taxes (we have a 13.5% province tax and the gov takes 35 to 40% of every paycheck (actually, the more you work the more they take!). Also, I'm pretty sure that the general COL in Fl is cheaper than in Québec, I can't talk about the other provinces since I don't know anything about the COL there. For example, the car tag costs about $260 a year, the grocery is pretty expensive, the nursing licence is about $300 a year, the gas equal to about $4.50 a gallon, etc)).
Thanks for replying!

The fact that you are a nurse gives you a HUGE advantage. Just about everyone I know or even who has posted here in the past has been able to get some kind of job if they are in medical care. Orlando should be a great place for you to check out, Medical City is there. I think good nurses are always in demand, if you have good experience, you should have no problem. Plus, I assume you are probably bi-lingual? That gives you even more advantage if so.
Another smug response form someone who obviously is still working and feels most of those that are unemployed either somehow deserve it or are too lazy to find something else. I can only hope at some point justice is served and those of your ilk get to experience what it's like in the real world.
This place is full of "smug". Everyone is one mutated cell, one slip of the brake pedal, one pink slip, one second of inattention away from possible financial ruin. Like you said, karma can be a funny thing.
The wages in Florida are horrible.
The wages in Florida have always been horrible.
The wages (real) in Florida will probably decline before they increase.
The wages in Florida compared to the cost of living are worse than horrible (my property insurance just went up $100 a month because....they can, I guess).
My advice-get used to working for spit or get trained in some kind of finance. Better yet, marry rich.
At one time I would have recommended getting skilled in a trade, but the days of blue collar workers getting ahead are fleeting.
Listen people the wages are somewhat lower but try living in Nj as i did for 25 years. Insurance on my car alone was $4000 a year... Taxes on my parents 3 family home is 13,000 a year... I understand everyone is from different places and are accustomed to different pricing but trust me FL is no where close to prices in other places. Let's face it $ 8 dollars a hour is bs but if i made $16 up north just with taxes and my insurance i'd even out... There's a balance to everything if you don't wanna make 8 a hour get another job and make another 8 lol...

You have a great attitude, Jlopes. Some people think the world owes them a living.

so then why do you live here?
Seriously, for all of your complaining about property insurance, have you looked at the other costs of living elsewhere? Gas taxes, income taxes (of which FL has NONE), sales taxes, property taxes etc. are much higher in states like CA and in much of the northeast.
For each person's situation it's different, but for me, it was a much better deal to avoid getting taxed to death than to stay up in the NE. In NY, I had to deal with a higher sales tax, plus an income tax and property taxes that were double what they were in FL, for a given property value. I also paid 30-40 cents more per gallon every time I filled up.
Thank you Gypsychic for your reply and I agree with Chopchop0. Everybody's situation is different.
As I said on my thread, I live in Québec and believe me, it's not easy either. I agree that we didn't feel much the economy crash, but COL here is pretty high. I can give you many examples: gas is worth about $4.50 a gallon, we have 13.5% province taxes, car tag is about $260 a year, driver's licence is about $100 every 2 years, grocery is pretty expensive, the gov takes about 35 to 40% of every paycheck we own and we even have to pay them back at the end of the year and believe me, medical care is not "free", we pay for it and it's hidden in the 35-40% taxes from our paycheck. I could keep going like that but I'm sure you have a good idea on the situation. On the other hand, home insurance and taxes aren't so expensive but we do have a welcome tax (can you believe this!) when we buy a home.
The fact also, is that in Fl, we don't have to buy winter cloths and it's a huge advantage, for me at least, because it could get very expensive especially when you have kids and I think people who live up north would agree with me!
Anyway, I think every place has it's own advantages and disadvantages!!!

Oh yeah, I've been to Montreal. That's one expensive city. I remember it was $3/hr just to park on the street in downtown!
If you are an RN, you can have a very good lifestyle down here. Property values have plummeted with the housing crisis, and you will certainly pay less in taxes and for gas.
You have a pretty sweet deal in this time of economic difficulties, and would urge you to hang onto your current job.
Moving anyplace with an unemployment rate over 8% without a job lined up first IMO is economic suicide. Notice the states that makeup the top slots. North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Wisconsin, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire and Texas. Texas is the only state in the Sunbelt with a low unemployment rate, otherwise it's the Plains States or Upper New England.
and I wouldn't recommend very many areas in WI either. Jobs are scarce there, though persistent people can find work. Pretty state though, just drove through it the last week all the way straight to Grafton, my home town. Nice place to live, if ya can find a job. High taxes, and all the roads are paved, though many are in not so good shape. One thing I like about living out here in (eastern) SD.. WHITE all winter long. I dunno if I'd want to live in an area where it's cold enough to have the typical winter "brown" dead look, yet too warm to keep snow on the ground. I should take some pics and post em.. in fact I will tomorrow. A sea of white, with a 10-30 mile visibility, depending on where you're standing. At my mothers place I can use binoculars and see the wind generators 30 miles away... and pitch black at night.. the light that's supposed to be lit on all acreages has been dead for some time. It has it's own beauty though I do prefer trees and karst topography. A full moon on a cold winter night? Paradise.. well sort of. lol
