Thumbs down I-4!!!!

OMG this is the ONLY thing about Florida that I do NOT like!! Driving on I-4!!!!
We took a trip to Ft. Myers this weekend and had to go through Orlando. Let me just say that it was a white-knuckled ride from you-know-where!! we were almost hit 4 or 5 times! I see what some people were saying about it now!
And I wont be driving that way any time soon, LOL!

I am terrified of that interstate! Even driving in NYC or DC isn't as bad as the stretch of I4 right near Tampa. It took us an hour and a half to travel 2 miles one time. There wasn't even an accident, just Thursday rush hour. I have to give credit to those who commute on that road on a daily basis!

As much as I like Orlando - I concurr that I-4 is a white-knuckled ride from #*!!.

I used to frequently drive I-285; I-75 and I-85 in Atlanta. As bad as these roads can be during rush hour, it doesn't even compare to I-4. The best is during Bike Week or Race Week in Daytona!!! I-4 turns into Suicide Ally all the way from Lakeland through Orlando and into Daytona.

Why don't they just turn it into a 10 lane superhighway like they did to I-95 in South Florida or build a toll road that actually runs parallel to it, instead of that useless Greeneway. Our North/South roads don't even back up during rush hour. Then again, it's just a grid down here.

I guess I-95 is better up in Broward because it is a royal mess in Dade - about the same as what everyone has been saying about I-4 (which I have had the displeasure of being stuck on a few times as well). Countless times we would try to head north for the weekend and try to "beat" the rush hour on I-95 by leaving work early, and it would take us forever just to get to the Golden Glades. Even the HOV lane comes to a standstill (probably because no one really respects that it's an HOV lane). . We used to joke that there must have been forces trying to punish us by not letting us out of S FL! The turnpike is really the only road that is worth anything in Dade if you want to travel at a reasonable speed, but even that is starting to have issues as the development marches onward. We lived very close to the Palmetto and the southern end of I-95 and would often drive out of our way to take the Turnpike north. Thankfully though, as long as it's a toll road, it will never be like I-95 or I-4.

I definitely agree that some of these roads need some serious help - what the quick solution is, however, is beyond me.

Well, people suck at driving in Broward just as bad as Dade though, but the only real traffic issues in Broward are on I-595. That can be a royal pain in the a** during rush hour, but usually only for short stretch.

my problem with I-4 while I was in Orlando wasn't white knuckle, it was more like sitting in traffic that wasn't moving at all. For a long, long time....

I guess if you can live AND work in Broward you basically have it made, FL? I'm assuming that commuting from Broward to Miami is a pain.

Pretty much. Unless you are commuting into Fort Lauderdale Via 595 from Davie or Weston. That's not very fun, but at the same time, not that bad.

I agree, I-4 is crazy! Every time I've driven that route from Daytona to Orlando something has happened....the last one being that I got in the middle of two cars full of drivers wanting to fight (a Friday night) - with one car on the left of me and the other on the berm of the road to my right. There were teenagers hanging out the windows in both cars, one standing up through the sunroof of the car to my right all yelling back and forth. (not that you could understand them). Then the one threw a bottle over the top of my car at the other - it missed. I slowed down hoping they would pass, but they didn't. Finally they both sped up and got off one of the exits near Winter Park and stopped their cars right on the ramp. As I passed and looked in my rear view mirror, they were all getting out of their cars to fight. My mom was with me and called to police to report them on my cell phone. Whew! I haven't been back on I-4 since.

I really hope they don't get rid of that farmland between Tampa and Orlando on I-4 to create some "Orlampa" nightmare. If I had to pick anything that I really don't like about Florida it's their tendency to overdevelop.
