Default Retiring in Inverness,Florida..

Hello there! My husband and I are seriously planning to buy a retirement home in Inverness, Fl.We visited the town twice when we went on holidays in Florida 2 years ago.We think that it is a good place to retire. We still have a good few years before we retire so we are planning to either rent the place or make it a holiday home if we are successful in finding the right ONE.We did some research about Inverness but we feel that we need more information.
Any thoughts would be highly appreciated...Thanks!!!

Like, what kind of info? IMO it's one of the greatest places to live in Florida with only a couple of negatives, lack of white sandy beaches and healthcare is kind of hit or miss. It's very safe and not nearly as congested as other FL retirement hotspots allthough you can notice a significant increase in traffic during winter months.

There's some great deals on just about anything you could want from older houses with large lots, gated communities, lakefront homes etc.

My SO and I really love this area, too. The biggest drawback from our perspective is the distance to a decent beach. We want to relocate to Florida as soon as possible, but will probably have to wait until he can retire in 5 years (I retired 2 years ago so I am good to go!). We are torn between Inverness with its low key atmosphere, beautiful lakes, great bike trails and steadier property values, and the Port Charlotte/North Port area further south, with the fantastic real estate bargains, proximity to the beach, and more tropical climate.

Decisions...decisions!

I am sure you will make the correct decision in time.

If you are beach loving people or just want to be around beaches then NP would be the wise choice.

Inverness is a nice nestled secret in Florida but would be a long commute to a decent beach.

Someone on this board a while back said if you go to the beach more then 5 times in a month then you need to be within 30 minutes of the beach. I tend to believe them but again it depends on how much beach time you want to have and if you mind an hour or more commute to a decent beach.

Good luck and go down and drive from Inverness to your pick of beaches so you will know what you might be up against.

In our move to Florida in a couple of months we had to give up some things to get other things so it was a trade off so everyone could have a little of what they like close by.

When I first landed in FL in 1994, Inverness is where it was. I liked it there a lot.... Country setting, farm land. Loved it there. I have bot seen it in 16 years and I hope it it still as great as it was back then...

I would find a nice place in Inverness and put in a nice pool. Inverness is a nice little town. Unless you are fully retired you'll be amazed at how little beach time there actually is. On those perfect beach days, thousands of people have the same idea. After a couple years of going to the beaches we finally put in a pool. No neighbors close by so it isn't crowded, no problem trying to find a parking space. Overall a good choice for us.

Thanks everyone!!!As what I have mentioned in my initial post, we still have a good few years before we retire, so if we are successful in finding the right home , we plan to either rent it out or use it as a holiday home.Any thoughts regarding this?Do you think its easy to rent out a property in Inverness?

You mentioned that healthcare is hit or miss in Inverness. I've also checked out Inverness in the past (couple of years ago). I was wondering about the medical situation there as well. How good is the hospital there? I would imagine that the closest alternative is either Ocala or Tampa?

Inverness really is a lovely town, people are great, low crime. As far as health care, there are a lot of great doctors, the hospital here in town is ok for minor problems but if I was needing any major surgery
I would probably go elsewhere. There are other hospitals in the area, Crystal River, Brooksville, Ocala,
Lakeland, etc. I can't say how they are due to no personal knowledge of them.

From my experiences I would avoid Citrus Memorial and go to Seven Rivers Hospital in Crystal River. Can't comment on any Ocala hospital as I've never been, but for serious or life threatening situations I would go to Shands in Gainesville.
