I went to Sunrise Junior High School right in that area that I believe you're referring to. There was a lot of racial tension when I attended there in 1971-1973. They were just initiating the bussing-in of the kids off west Sunrise Blvd. That school was about the roughest part of my childhood.
I also used to live in a small neighborhood directly behind the Galleria Mall on east Sunrise. ("Sweet!") We could walk to the beach, or our favorite pizza place, "Pizza Joe's Pizza Shack" across from Birch State Park. Any chance that place is still there? (I haven't been to Lauderdale in 10 years, even though I live in Sarasota).

I'm not sure if its the place you are thinking of, but I passed a place called Pizza Shack walking to the "famous" (overrated) Primanti Brothers Pizza. Maybe its because i'm not from Pittsburgh, but I thought Primantis wasn't that great. lol

Oh, and the schools in Fort Lauderdale still have a lot of racial tension. The general environment is not really tense anymore, but there is still that leftover air of racial tension left over in much of the Broward school system from the days of the old South.

I just missed you, fort lauderdale... sleep well... I voted for Dade.
I know of people outside Florida who automatically think of Miami as the most dangerous area in Florida. Hard to imagine it isn't. It has a reputation of being most dangerous unfortunately.

Doesn't surprise me that Palm Beach is up and coming in crime. What with the
damn gangs in Boynton, Riviera Beach, etc. it's getting really bad here. They
didn't address the gangs years ago when they should have, now it seems to
be out of control....and if they are not gangs you have the little creepy
gangsta wannabees with the pants down around their ankles who are just out
there looking for trouble...what no jobs you say? look in the classifieds..these
clowns could get jobs, why bother when you can rob people and rip off the
seniors....what scum...Wish they would all drown or something.

I totally agree, I encountered some MS-13 guys in Boynton Beach up to no good. Boynton used to mostly be a safe area too, but the eastern half has REALLY got bad lately. It's not booming in gang activity like Orlando is, but there are a lot of surenos, MS-13, etc moving into/established Central PBC. They used to be wannabe gangs, but the real thing is there now, because nobody wants to address it. We don't have MS-13 in Broward yet (which is honestly surprising), but I have a feeling it is only a matter of time. Our law enforcement is good down here, though, but I bet they will be active in Lauderdale in a matter of time if they don't get their police department under control. I could also be mistaken, and there could be active Surenos/other illegal alien associated gangs there, even though I have never encountered a neighborhood with a high presence of illegals.

Wow, not many Orange County votes, but 4 for PBC. I am surprised.

I would say Hillsborough and Orange are tied in my book. I think those two counties are miles ahead of Dade as far as crime. I'm sure Hillsborough is probably at the bottom of the list but I can't help feeling uncomfortable whenever I visit that area. My third pick would be Palm Beach based on the stories I've heard from people who have relocated to Ft. Myers from there.

Hillsoborugh was actually a county I forgot to put, and was 4th I think out of 10. Orange was the worst, dade was 3rd, Duval was 2nd (nobody is going to want to acknowledge that though). Broward was the safest I listed, and 8th safest out of 10 largest counties. I don't think PBC as a whole is really that dangerous. Just the central part of the county is, but there are a lot of inconsistencies throughout the county. I was wondering what people felt though, regardless of stats. Its interesting to see how nobody finds Duval dangerous, regardless of it being the 2nd most dangerous in the state statistically.I have found that a lot of people wear rose colored glasses about No. Fla and the panhandle and greatly exaggerate what goes on in Dade/Broward/Palm Beach county, especially Broward.
