be cautious!
I am familiar with some of the names - Pulte & Ryland in the DC area, and they do not have the best reputation. I have watched them build houses, and several years later noticed siding coming off within the first 5-10 years; just never got the feel of quality. Going into model homes of theirs, they decorate them very esthetically pleasing, but in a strong gust of wind, don't think I would like to be there.
The other builders are not names I have heard of.

i know all 4, but never actually been inside of a david weekley or taylor woodrow. ryland and pulte are the most known builders throughout the u.s. i'd go with one of those 2. but go in each one and see what the warranties are on the homes and so forth...

I'd suggest you research David Weekley
Here's some info about awards they've won:
Few builders in America have received more industry recognition than David Weekley Homes. Since our beginning in 1976, we've won hundreds of awards for excellence in homebuilding, including 336 for home design alone.
We're the first homebuilder in history to attain the most coveted Triple Crown in Homebuilding awards in our industry: "America's Best Builder," "National Builder of the Year," and the "National Housing Quality Award."

Hi. I just had a home built by Smith Family homes. I know they are not on your list, but wanted to throw this in since I am completely satisfied with my new home. They give you a lot of what others consider upgrades in a home. I have seen David Weekly homes...very nice, but I think Pulte does a lot of cookie cutter homes.
