backtofla: I know how you feel. Where I grew up - Massachusetts - is no longer what it was anymore, either. I think we all want things to be the way they were, but they are not. So much is going wrong in this country, especially in certain areas.
I lived in Orlando from 1996 to 1998. I thought it was a lovely city, although some of it was very bad. Since then, it has gotten so much worse. I would never want to raise my daughter there.
You, I, all of us, need to go where it is affordable, safe and with decent jobs. When I find that place I'll let you know. Until then, I got your back Bubba, whatever you decide to do.

I have no clue about how firmly your extended family is rooted where they are at right know. But, who knows, if everything turns out as expected for you in the northeast, maybe some of them(at least your side, who are the native Floridians) will end up thinking about joining you there.

Northern Fla is only a couple of hours from Orlando right, unless your way out on the panhandle? Won't it still be easy to visit relatives?

I've never heard of SC as a mecca for jobs--what type of jobs?

The cost is lower but you will have a state tax. winters in sc are not bad it might get an ice storm but it will be gone by noon. I hunt there and I have seen snow 1 time and it was gone by noon also. The good thing is if we get a storm your family has somewere to go .

I Live in northern FL
I moved to northern FL a year ago and am desperate to leave. I was born in FT Lauderdale and spent the first 27 years of my life there. That counts for nothing at this point.
I have scoured the Gainesville Sun everyday for a year, sent hundreds of faxes and received ONE job offer for $8.00 per hour. My resume does not include Yale or Dartmouth, but it's not awful either. The job I held before I came here was for the Federal Government. I worked there 5 years.
The drivers here are the worst in the world and will run you right off the road especially on I-75, the rents are twice what I paid in Wilmington, DE, my clothing is molding in my closet and people catch and eat the varmints running wild here.
Please DO NOT move your wife to north FL or you may be in for a divorce.

Wow, have you been there in the last three years? Its not a mecca of jobs yet. But look at it this way. Rails are there, Roads are there, Workers are there, sea ports are there, Three airports are there, Cost of utilities are less. And all the buildings are there. When the textiles went overseas all the infrastructure was still there. If your a CEO its a dream come true. And on the plus side drive north on I-85 and NC has all the banking and high tech.
