Ft. Lauderdale/ Naples
Hello,
Might be need to relocate to either Ft. Lauderdale or Naples for Med School, I am currently in Portland Oregon, but orginally from the south, just finished my first year in Med school here and really need to get back to the sun, I'm considering a few different schools in the south, thus I have posts all over this board.
Questions
1) Looking for a very active community, involved, ect.
2) Farmers markets, access to fresh produce and organic food
3) outdoor things, hiking, ect
4) Biking? a good way to communte or no
In general I would just like to hear the negs and pos of the area
Thanks
Laura

Forget Naples if you are under 55. Go for Fort Lauderdale. They both cost the same anyway.
1. Active community? Pretty much any community in the Fort Lauderdale area will provide that. Volunteer Broward is a good organization to get involved in. Volunteer Broward
2. Farmers market, access to produce, etc honestly sucks here (fort Lauderdale). Naples would be better for that, because you can go out to the fruit stands in Immokallee. Here, you have to drive all the way down to Homestead to go to the stands, and that's only in the winter!
3.Both places offer an array of things to do. Hollywood Beach is an awesome place to go jogging in the Fort Lauderdale area, and you aren't far (about an hour) from Evergaldes National Park. On the Naples side, you have all of the hiking options in Big Cypress preserve.
4. No. I know people who do it, but that's not really optimal in either city.
Overall, Fort Lauderdale is more dynamic and interesting, Naples is more quiet and laid back. Decide which suits you!

Fort Lauderdale in my opinion. I think Naples is more for 55+
1) Looking for a very active community, involved, ect.
While I don't think you may immediately find folks around you engaging, you will have to make an effort such as voluteering or going to meetups. But there are plenty of good helpful folks here like me
2) Farmers markets, access to fresh produce and organic food
Little difficult but we do have Whole Foods here and there are one or two farmers markets
3) outdoor things, hiking, ect
a lot of water related stuff of course. It is flat here so hiking is not big. There are some lovely state parks and some even have man made mountain bike trails.
4) Biking? a good way to communte or no
not really. You will need a car. Biking is more recreational not functional around here. BCT (broward county transit) is not that great.

No, not really. I know it in terms of the optometry program.
I was trying to think what Med school was up towards Naples but I was thinking MD, not DO.
If you want to wait until 2009 and come to SOUTH FLORIDA, FIU will be opening up their brand new med school.

NSU is a great university. I say go for it. You can live relatively affordably right next door to it too, Davie is a decent area and close to the exciting stuff.
