What are the race relations like in Lake City Florida
I am an African American from MI and I may be moving to Lake City soon. I want to know is there any diversity in the area and what is the racial atmosphere like? I am worried because I here such horrible things about the south. Can anyone help? Thanks

You might want to try posting on the Jacksonville forum as well, we have some posters who are familiar with, or live in Lake City.
You might want to add why you're moving there - is it for family, or a job? Are you open to other areas? That kind of thing. (Lake City itself is quite small and rural).

I think there are 6 black people and 15 white people in Lake City... (Ok, bad joke).
Seriously, Lake City is quite small. I've never heard or seen anything about bad race relations in Lake City. However, unless you are a small-town kind of person, race relations will be low on your list of "culture-shock" in moving to Lake City. It is more of a country, southern town in Florida's panhandle. I suppose if you are moving from the UP, you might find the place pretty lively. If from Detroit....well, I'd just tell you to spend two weeks there first, and see if you can handle figuring out how to entertain yourself.

foxxy I can't speak for Lake City but Florida is a very diverse state and for what it's worth I'm hispanic. The last thing I would worry about moving to Florida is race relations.

Prichard,
Do you consider that the panhandle? It's just west of Jacksonville, so I consider it NorthCentral or even a little NorthEast......unless there are 2 Lake Cities?

Thanks for the info everyone. It is very helpful. Actually I will be moving there for a job, I am praying they offer it to me. I am from Detroit and the thought of moving to a slower pace seems very appealing to me right now.
I found a lot of info at: http://www.city-data.com/city/Lake-City-Florida.html.
Thanks

Lake City is very conservative. I think there are several powerful fundamendalist Churches there.
There has been some racial conflict in the recent past there. Mainly due to tiffs over the confederate flag if memory serves me correctly. There is a large reenactment of a civil war battle near there every year which brings a lot of confederate flags to town.
That being said, I think you will find a lot of good welcoming people there of all races and creeds. If you are friendly most will respond the same.. The town is growing fast and economics are more important to most folks there than old racial attitudes.
I dont think the crime is nearly as bad there as Detroit or Jacksonville. As for the racial conflict from a black prospective , just check with the local NAACP for any local details.

Thanks for lumping us in with Detroit .
Lake City is a blip on the radar - less than 10,000 people. Jacksonville has nearly 800,000, and if you include the Beaches & Baldwin (the unincorporated parts), we are well over a million. To try and compare crime between the two is comparing apples and oranges.
