How did you get a quote from USAA? They sent out a letter a couple of months ago that said they were only writing new policies for military transferred in with orders. They also aren't going to renew non-primary residence policies in the state, either but are continuing primary residence coverage already in place.

We are new customers with USAA for our car insurance and they told me that they are NOT writing home owner or renter insurance in FLORIDA ANY LONGER AS OF THREE MONTHS AGO.

If you already have a renters or homeowner (primary residence) policy in place, they will continue to cover you. Likewise, if you go from renter to buyer, they will move coverage from renters to homeower. If you have existing coverage on a non-primary residence (i.e. vacation or investment property), they will be dropping that coverage (but they weren't sure of when last time I talked with them, in June). If you are moving to the state and need NEW coverage, they will ONLY cover renters & homeowner for active duty military transferred here.

What surprised me in the letter was the figures they provided - the claims here were a huge % of the total claims for the year, yet the % of membership living here is very small. Can't say that I blame them. And like I've said before, if USAA is moving out, you KNOW there's a problem. And this was a result of the wonderful "fix" the legislature came up with last session. Some fix.

A mortgage broker told me you can estimate homeowner's insurance to be about 1.5% of your house value. I don't know whether this is realistic or not - it is for our house.

The problem with Governor Crist's Web site is that the insurance quotes are for a 5-year old, $150,000 CBS house. This is great for illustrating how premiums vary, but it is not great for illustrating actual costs. If the average cost of a house in Palm Beach County is well over $350,000, and the age of the house is greater than 5 years - let's just ignore frame versus CBS for now - then you can bet your insurance will be a whopping amount more than whatever that Web site says.
