We were relocating to Florida next month for our daughter's health, but the more I read the online newspapers the more I think it is a bad idea.

Is there such a place in Florida where the happenings aren't so crazy & dangerous? We really want to be there, but not at the expense of our family's safety.

Where are you looking? That makes the difference... Where I live nothing ever happens. Reasearch is key.

Florida's bad news gets SO much more attention than a lot of other places... but it's not that bad, most of the state is full of very friendly people! You were made aware of the crime because you started reading the news online... you can do that with any major city in the country and you'll see the exact same headlines. Do your research and choose one of Fl's many wonderful and family oriented areas. You can enter each individual town right here on CD and get crime stats... I have friends who also moved to Fl years ago for health related purposes, they now have small children and couldn't imagine themselves anywhere else.

Do your research. Check out costs, amenities and area. Here and on other sites. Florida overall does appear to have higher crime than other states. Talk to people.

This site has some good information and there are other sites that discuss crime. Look at crime categories and rates as well as the indexes they give.

After seeing most of the crime I've seen in Texas and Louisiana, I feel like I could walk through some of Tampas worst neighborhoods at 3am and feel safter then I do now.

There are alot of worse places in the U.S. but I have been shocked to see how bad Orlando's gotten over the past decade.

I am not (yet) a Florida resident, but let me throw in my opinion please.

Do your research as others have said. If all you go by is what the news says, then you will hear mostly about crime. Heck I watch the news everyday here in CT and mostly all I hear about is the bad stuff (but I know there are many good parts).

"nothing racial"? Are you serious? I also have yet to meet anyone in Orlando who is a "Katrina" victim! I guess the only people who commit crimes in Orlando are from the Carribean or those "black" Katrina victims huh?
