Do you guys have the 3 strikes law in your state?Or do you have anything similar to it, to curb crime?Who do you think is your states best advocate for trying to bring crime under control? I appreciate in answers.

From what it appears to me, Florida's prisons are over crowded to the extreme, to where there is a revolving door for criminals. Some criminals are arrested 30+ times and have to commit murder before they do any serious time. And now with the budget cuts, I saw on the news that hundreds of Correction Officers may lose their jobs. Couple that with the average 2% cut per student for education.

On a more local level, I have gained a solid respect for Sheriff Grady Judd (Polk County). He seems to be a no-nonsense guy, especially trying to curtail crimes against children. I won't soon forget what happened to the animal that shot Deputy Matt Williams and his K9 Diogi, and the interview of Grady afterwards. He is the kind of Sheriff we need more of in this state.

Florida has a knack for putting non violent drug offenders away for long periods while farming out the dealers as CI's on the streets to make their arrests look good.

We certainly do not have any 3 strikes laws in place...you'll go to jail longer than a drug addict for driving on a suspended license here...imagine that?

Florida is a plea bargain state; easier to push through that a trial...

Thanks for the info. Was curious, if you had something similar to that law.

I had always heard that Florida was pretty tough on law breakers. In California, we were thrilled when we heard Ted Bundy was going to be tried there.

So we do have 3 strikes? No felons that I've known have ever had it applied to them....

Some of the stuff these people do should be a first strike law...

In order for the accused to be exposed to the mandatory minimum penalties under the new law, the State must show that the accused meets five separate criteria.

1)The accused has been convicted of a violent felony twice before. For purposes of the statute, even a withhold of adjudication counts as a conviction.

2)Each conviction took place on a separate occasion, including the third offense for which the defendant is presently being sentenced.

3)The present offense is a violent felony (i.e., arson, sexual battery, robbery, kidnapping, murder, etc.).

4)The present offense was committed while serving any sentence imposed as a result of being convicted of another violent felony or within five years of being convicted of a violent felony, or within five years of finishing a sentence imposed for a violent felony.

5)The accused has not been pardoned for a prior violent felony conviction or had a prior violent felony conviction overturned on appeal or other post conviction proceeding.

The following states have enacted three strike laws:

~In 1974: Texas
~In 1993: Washington
~In 1994: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Indiana, Kansas, Nevada, North Dakota
~In 1995: Arkansas, Georgia, Maryland, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Utah, Vermont, Wisconsin
~In 1996: Florida, Tennessee, Virginia

You have no clue what your talking about.... Florida has had the three strike law on the books since 1999.... Either know what your talking about or do some research before you open your mouth

There are no 3 strikes laws per se in Florida but we do have laws that address habitual offenders and prison releasees that create much stricter sentencing guidelines for these type of offenders.
