25 Columbus, OH 12.9 3,966

This is pretty scary! I've lived in 3 of these places and soon to be 4 (with Jacksonville).

Why does Florida have so many AIDS cases? I would think because a number of these people move here after the fact? I wouldn't think that all of these infections occur in Florida.. especially Cape Coral/Ft Myers. I was shocked and repulsed to see my hometown on the list. It surprises me as Cape Coral is very suburban. It would be akin to Eden Prarie, MN or Peachtree City, GA on the list.

There is vastly less sex education in the south. The bible belt folks usually don't want to talk about sex and therefore people suffer due to their own ignorance.

I find it not really shocking but more scary that Miami has the most AIDS cases per person.I think I saw another post on here years ago that said Belle Glade by Lake Okeechobee has like some ridiculous figure like 1 in 20 or something like that.

I looked up more on Belle Glade and the story was actually from the mid 80's when it had the highest AIDS rate in the nation, but it wasn't 1 in 20 but more like 1 in 500,still pretty bad though.Hopefully it's gotten better.

I've read that that Florida, especially southern Florida, has an unusually high number of senior citizens with HIV. They didn't grow up with the fear of it and don't seem to realize that it can affect them too.

I definitely was NOT shocked to see Fort Myers/Cape Coral on the list. I attended high school nearby in Lehigh Acres 2 years ago and kids were sleeping around like it wasn't nobody's business. And I'm not just talking about straight people. I'm talking gays and lesbian kids as well. Girls were getting pregnant left and right. These kids were running around school sexing up everyone like they had no home training or morals. I didn't expect any different when I found out I was moving to the area. There is nothing to do for kids in the Fort Myers area but have parties, get drunk, high, and have sex. I never did any of that crazy stuff because of my upbringing and religious beliefs. My friends as well. But then again, the east coast also has a high STD/AIDS rate. I used to live near West Palm Beach and heard all kinds of stories. Girls having sex with girls in the bathroom and all kinds of stuff. I remember once I was walking home from school and these boys approached me thinking I was gay and going to have sex with them. I was pissed off and disgusted. These kids have no morals or sexual restraint. Kids in south FL are out of control and it's no surprise to me that there is a high AIDS rate all throughout. Just yesterday I was on facebook and I joined a group with alot of kids from South FL. The discussion was "Do any of ya'll use a condom?" and a bunch of kids were saying no. One girl even said "lol no" like it's funny to risk getting an STD and risking someone else's life. I was disgusted. I tried preaching to them about the rising HIV rate throughout the country but nobody listened. When I yelled at them do any of them read the news, they mocked me and was like "Who the hell reads the news? You?" I was like, uhhh yeah? These kids don't care about their lives. And it all starts with their parents who also don't care.

I think it's because of the sexual and materialistic culture propagated through the media for decades that has pervaded South Florida.

Hmmmmm.....now what do all those cities have in abundance? Can't figure it out.... no.... not a clue...

On a separate note and totally unrelated, I'm sure, to the above paragraph: I just the other day read in Reuters that for 2009, blacks had HIV infections at eight times the rate for whites, and Hispanics got infected at three times the rate for whites.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/...e=domesticNews

But back to why those cities in Florida are boiling over with HIV.... Nope. Can't imagine why.

Really?

It couldn't the huge influx of Haitian and other immigrants down in South Florida now could it? Those immigrants have moved around the state.

Ignorance abounds.

Minorities and immigrants are known to have higher Aids/HIV cases and that has more to do with their socio economic status & lack of access to healthcare. I would imagine that might be case for Miami. A lack of education would just be ignorance then since I grew up in the Miami Dade school system and we had sex education classes in the 7th. grade & were taught about all STDs & safe sex.
